No you don't need a return ticket. But with most Airlines it's cheaper to buy a roundtrip and just cancel the return ticket than just buying a one-way ticket.

Reread carefully the NOTE:  it says "relevant residence permit."  A k1 is relevant

YMMV

Every time my husband comes to the U.S. for a visit he is asked for evidence of a return ticket by TSA.  They are probably looking for an intent to return to his country and not stay illegally.  He just shows an email confirmation and they accept it.  He isn't a "resident" yet, just has a B1/B2 visa.

B1/B2 visa holders travel to US with intent to return back that's why they may be asked for return ticket. K1 visa holders move to US with intent to adjust and live in the US and so won't be asked for return ticket. Two unrelated scenarios.

Though note that if you use a return/round-trip ticket to enter the US on a K-1, make sure to cancel the return leg (or keep rescheduling it into the future until you actually have a green card or advance parole). There have been cases where people who didn't cancel the return flight were incorrectly reported has having left the country, and so had problems with adjusting status.
