Translating my birth certificate

Hello ! I got into USA with my K-1 visa on May 28th, got married with my sweetheart on June 4th, and now we are getting the package together to apply for AOS. My question is would it be ok if I sent my birth certificate to the greek embassy here in the states and get it translated? would it count? or do I have to send it back home ?

it's really confusing.

Hi,

Although this isn't an official government website, I see here (http://www.***removed***/immigration/birth-certificate.html) that it says "If the birth certificate is not in English, it can either be transcribed by a professional translator or even by anyone who is fluent in both languages (other than the beneficiary for whom it is being prepared)."

There is also some additional information about how the translation should be filed.

I know there has been some other posts about this - maybe search for 'translation' here on VJ and you might get some more detailed instructions.

From what I understand, you can get someone fluent in both languages to translate it for you (in the same format/layout as the original), and they must sign the bottom and have it notarized. Again, search here on VJ and you will surely have your answer.

I guess I can only tell you about my experience and of someone else I know.

I had my husband's BC translated in Brazil - even before we mailed out the I-129F. I sent it then.

I also had to send it with the AOS paperwork (which I did - with the translator's signature and statement on the bottom of the translations).

An acquaintance of mine needed her husband's translated - so I did it - and signed my name/the date stating that I am competent to do so. She hasn't received an RFE for it.

I know many people do this...

Don't send it back to Greece. If you don't feel comfortable having a friend do it - you can look up translators in your area that can do it.

My birth certificate is in French and I used a translation service to do it. Just make sure they have a notary to stamp the translation. That is all you need! Most good translators are familar with what is needed to USCIS!

My husband translated his own birth certificate and just included this statement:

I (typed name) , certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled (name document).

Signature

Date

Typed Name

Address

This was on the advice of other VJers and we never had a problem, so if one of you feels comfortable doing this, you may not need to send it anywhere.

My husband and I translated his birth certificate together (okay, I did most of it) and he signed off on it (realized after we'd send it in that I forgot to do it as well, but oh well), and we didn't get an RFE, nor was it brought up at the interview. They accepted it as a valid translation.

Double check about the certified translator. Montreal made me use one for all my official records (Spanish). Good luck, L.

Not true! The translation can be done by anyone, you or your spouse, or a professional. Anyone that is fluent in both languages. Just get it notarized & you are all set!
