I get it now. Thank you very much, Pushbrk.

My dad is going to be the joint sponsor. As of 2 days ago, he hasn't filed his 2020 return. He uses an accountant and I'm not sure of what's going on. How do you recommend I handle this? I've already asked what kind of timeline we are looking at to get the return, but have not received an answer.

You ask your Dad to get his 2020 tax return filed right away.  He will either press his accountant to do it or he won't.  You cannot provide his affidavit and supporting document without the 2020 tax return.  Actually you CAN, but it will not be accepted.

So he got them sorted. I should be able to file all NVC paperwork by March 1.

Just to recap, I do not need to provide any financial information or tax records b/c I am not supporting my wife financially.

Correct?

No.

As the petitioner, you must file an I-864 and all financial documents.

Your Joint Sponsor Dad files a separate I-864 with his financial documents.

Have you followed this thread? I ask b/c in it, pshbrk has been quite clear that my circumstances require that I do not claim any income.

I've lived outside of the USA and all of my income is foreign based so it cannot be used to support my wife.

I know the rules.  You don't.

Don't file an I-864 as the petitioner.  Go ahead.

Jeez, do you have to be so rude?

I am filing the I-864, the question is about my income ON the I-864.

Pushbrk has told me to put a 0 for the total income as well as the income that I am using to sponsor this immigrant.

Did you have to be so rude by asking if I read your entire thread?

Please disregard my last post, Pushbrk. I'm digging into the directions and becoming a student of them as you suggested.

Something I haven't found is this: My income is $0. My father will be the joint sponsor. Do I need to provide a tax transcript even though my income is $0?

You are the primary sponsor even if you have no income or do not qualify on your own.  You provide a properly completed and signed I-864 and at least one tax return unless you were not required to file.  If you filed the last three, you'll provide information from all three but only need to submit the latest.

If you were required to file a tax return for 2021, you provide a complete copy or a tax return transcript.

Thank you.

I'm trying to register with the IRS to get a transcript. Not sure, how that's going to go. Otherwise, I'm just going to print out a copy of my 2020 return from TurboTax and send that. I have no W2s or work documents to attach. Is that a potential problem?

One more thing, I have my dad's transcripts from the last 3 years. He retired in 2021 so his income on that transcript (and the other 2) show his wages plus the pension. For the current income that he's using to sponsor my wife, I should only put the retirement income, correct?

He is not currently earning any "wages" so his monthly retirement income times 12 is his current income.

Understood. Thank you. I haven't filed 2021 yet. I'm assuming that's OK b/c tax day isn't until 4/15 and I'll use 2020 as the most recent year. Or not?

It's fine but you'll need to upload the 2021 before the interview, for you and your joint sponsor.
