Are you referring to your NVC case number? Call them and request it.

To get the case number you have to call NVC, I don't know why they can't tell the number. I heard that Canada is backlogged, so you might need to wait until it actually goes to the embassy. Here are regional forums and I am pretty sure there is a thread for Canada.

Give the NVC a call and ask for your case number and invoice number and they will provide these over the phone.

Sometimes that happens and other times you will have to wait on hold for an extended time.  Calling either early or very late during their advertised hours usually minimizes the hold time.
