Small rant about Social Security

Hey all, just posting this to vent and maybe get some advice. 

 

I came on a K1 visa in 2019, married my husband and decided to get a Social Security card. The first time we went I had all documents, I-94, etc, but the lady at the counter gave me hell because she claimed my full name doesn't match my I-94. (My name is ABCD, I-94 had only A D). So she sent my name for about three security checks and told me to wait, but they waited 2 months for my I-94 to expire to send me a letter saying that I was not eligible for a green card. Fair enough

 

So then I go through the AOS, everything is ok, I get to the stage of the interview for my green card and the interviewer was so cheery. We raised the issue of the SSN to the interviewer and he stamped approved, and said this will take care of it. Right after this covid hit and all the offices were closed, so I just received my green card and left this alone.

 

Come to now, here we are in 2021. I have put off getting a bank account for almost a year because of this issue, as I still don't have an SSN and a card and the office near me is still closed. So I decided to mail in photocopies of my passport, K1 visa, green card and other appropriate documents as well as a filled in application for SSN form.

 

And I got the all my documents back, with a printed paper saying 'You have not provided any identity documents, we have a list attached of documents that are approved', and that they only want originals and not photocopies. 

 

They didn't even attach the list of approved documents, and I'm appalled. I get that it's a photocopy, but my face was literally shown three times with all of my documents- 'no identity documents'??? The letter didn't even urge us to try to get an interview or anything like that. My husband is too weary of me sending my original passport in my mail as it could be lost, and we don't live in a major city near the consulate of the country I'm from so if it gets lost it'll be a hassle to reproduce. 

 

Tomorrow my husband wants to call the SSN office for what they have sent in that printed paper, as well as the fact they claimed they have provided a list but the list wasn't even in the envelope...

 

Sigh. Anyway. What a hassle!

Unfortunately they are required to sight  originals. This isn’t a problem when the SSA offices are open to the public.. mine still isn’t either.  I had to send my actual Green Card by mail in order to process an application for Medicare. Boy was that a long 2 weeks wait while they dealt with the application and sent it back. 
 

You can easily find the list of approved  identity documents on the SSA website. It’s that they need to see the originals that is the issue for you
