K1 can't get SSN

That's a shame that your bank manager doesn't know it's possible and that using FATCA as an excuse is wrong.

You can also try converting one of your bank accounts to an Account In Trust. So one of your bank accounts can be held "In Trust For" the foreign beneficiary. It's another good example of financial comingling.

The bank manager said "FACTA". That's wrong.

pffffffffffffffffft you are right about manager being wrong lol! It's literally in the title of "Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act ". No need to argue but with the right "touch" (in the words of my husband) you wouldn't be in the wrong to insist that her (or someone) shows you in the bank manual/policy where it states that a SSN is required in order to add a person to an account.  But that's only if you think it's worth it tho. I'm from a town of less than 1200 so dealing with small town mentalities sucks especially if you only have the one bank.

Well good luck. I hope you find a way. Maybe by the time you guys get the greencard interview you will have the SSN. If not, I am sure a short explanation as to why your spouse isn't on the account would be ok too.

Good for you. How does that help me?

Cmon, it's time to be an adult. You're married now and life isn't some walk in the park. You've been told you can add your wife to a bank account. Which is 100% true and instead you just want to get upset about it.

Also many credit card companies will let you add an authorized user without a SSN like CapitalOne as well. Time to once again search around for a bank willing to suit you. The whole point of choosing a banking establishment is finding one that FITS you, not one that does not help you. You can shop around but instead you're just whining about it. You are a customer, you have money, you use money, find a business that HELPS you. Your wife also cannot mail her passport to SSN. In order to be issued a brand new Social Security Number they MUST show up to the office in person for an interview, so your OP about mailing the passport is irrelevant.

Time to be an adult and solve your own problems because you know that all three of your above issues can be resolved by you just calling in daily and complaining, showing evidence of any of the above via dozens of sources on financial websites in regards to bank accnt/cc and proof he/she has a legal right to SS on the SS website.

Sorry to be blunt but I tried to baby you before and you just got snippy with me.

I have a 7 foot tall cousin. He can touch the gutter on the front of my house. I cannot. Because I am not 7 feet tall. If I ask him how to clean the gutter and he says "just reach up and clean it" the advice would not help me.

Are you really comparing being born a natural height to opening a bank account in America as a US Citizen and then adding your non-USC wife?

We tried the day after arriving. It wasn't possible for the reasons you see listed in the original post: the social security offices here aren't open for in person visits. They won't issue a SS without viewing my spouse's passport in person. Otherwise, thanks for the tip.

The tip was for others reading this thread, hence the way I worded it.

The two SS offices within 90 minutes of me have been closed since March 2020 (although all stores, casinos, bars, strip clubs and literally ALL other businesses have been open here for several months). Neither "local" office will allow us to schedule an in person appointment, "due to Covid". My wife who entered on a K1 will not be mailing her passport since it could very likely be lost. So it seems there's no way for her to get a SS#.

SSA has issued a new policy that will allow non citizens  to get an SSN or updated SS card without sending a passport, EAD, green card,  or other irreplaceable document:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

Individuals also qualify for an EXI if they are unable or unwilling to mail original evidence documents.

AND

IMPORTANT: Do NOT request a non-citizen to submit his or her immigration documents by mail or using the drop box. Due to DHS regulations, non-citizens are required to have their immigration documents in their possession at all times (GN 00303.610.B).”

Do not allow yourself to be badgered by an SSA bureaucrat into breaking the law.  Do not yield possession of these documents.

Now if we could only get the IRS to comply.

Whoops, just tried to add my wife to credit card. Can't do it. Here's what it says:

"You will need to provide your Additional Card Member’s Social Security Number now, or when you receive the Card. Your Additional Card will be canceled if this information is not provided within 60 days after the Card is issued."

Not sure if it still the case but I’ve been able to add authorized users to my United Explorer Visa card from Chase without an SSN for the AU.

Thanks buddy!

I wonder if I tell them this over the phone if they would just hang up on me again. That's what they did before. And I wasn't rude in the least bit.

Unfortunately it is too late anyway. Her entry expired. Now she is pending AOS. So I guess no SS for us!

I am looking at my other cards to try and add her now.

Thanks again pal!

Hello,

I was able to open a joint account with my husband who does not have a SSN at Santander Bank. Once I received the bank card from Santander, I was able to use that to open another joint bank account at Citibank.

After I read people's response to this post, I called Citibank and was able to add my husband to my credit card as an authorized user. I spoke to a representative that advised me to add him online since I wouldn't be asked for a SSN.

I wanted to share this information since I have learned so much from the people here. You all are an asset.

Best,

A
