Hi All,

I have a question regarding getting a Social Security # for my wife.

Her Visa was approved in March, 2020, she came here July, 2020 (delayed due to airport closures b/c of Covid).

We were married late July, 2020.  She is now in the process of getting her Green Card but we need a SSN for her for various reasons.  Has anyone had any experience getting one during the Green Card processing phase?

When I contact the SS Administration, some representatives state that she is able to get one, some say she can't.  I have tried to read various info. on it and still cannot get a clear answer, and am hoping someone here has experience they can share.

She is not allowed to work currently due to restrictions, so the SS # that we are looking for is the one that will state "Not valid for employment."

Any info/advice is greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend!

She will have to wait for her EAD or Green Card.  If she selected to receive one when submitting the I-765, it should arrive automatically.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

She WAS eligible to get one while her I94 was still valid (ie. It expired on Day 90) but because you did not apply right away as the process requires, she'll have to wait until she has a valid immigration status (ie. When she gets either her EAD or her GC) and is not in AOS pending status.

If you applied on the EAD it will arrive automatically in the mail a few weeks after the EAD.

If you get lucky and get a GC interview FIRST, she will have to go in in person and apply with that as her EAD process and the corresponding SSN application will discontinue processing.
