Hello,

We are getting ready to send in our AOS packet, and just so happend to also be moving in June. We just signed the lease which starts June 1st, but have the old apartment through June 30th as well, so there is a month of overlap which opens up a few options.

I am a bit concerned about things getting lost when we are moving right when the packet makes it to USCIS, so I wanted to hear what some more experienced folks are thinking what the best course of action might be.

I was thinking I'll file using our current address ASAP (before end of May), no mention of the new address yet. Then, in mid to late-June, we would both file an AR-11 change of address with USCIS, me for the pending AOS and she for the I-864. If we don't have a NOA1 by then, we'd have to do it by mail, not online, is that correct?

Do you see any issues with this approach?

The other option I was considering is to file all the paperwork with the new address already as mailing and physical address - in which case I'd probably hold off until June 1st - except we won't be physically living at the new place for about 2-3 weeks while we move. Also, would we still need to submit an AR-11, or will adding the new address to all the forms be enough for USCIS to register our move?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

The sponsor, after submitting the I-864, should complete an I-865 for an address change.  It must be mailed.

Of course, my bad. I saw that yesterday but it had already slipped my mind that they want a different form for the sponsor. Thank you for pointing it out!

If she filled out the I-864 with the new address though, would that eliminate the need to file an I-865?

Thanks!

What about my own change of address?

Will it be a problem for USCIS to see a new address on the I-485 that is different from the address I provided before? Or will they just assume I moved and that's why it changed?

In short: If we wait until June 1st and file everything with the new address, would that be acceptable to USCIS? Because it seems that would be the most efficient.

Additionally, is it possible to check with USCIS what address(es) they have on file after we file everything, to make sure they registered everything correctly?

USCIS is currently taking 2-3 months to receive applications, cash checks and issue receipts. That being said, do not expect to hear anything from them for 3 months, at least.

So, file with the new address like as of yesterday. Get in the queue early. It is gonna be a long ride that requires patience.

Keep away form AR-11 as much as you can. I got friends who legitimately moved and filed address change a month ago, but up to now USCIS has not given them any update. There was a poster here yesterday who was lamenting on this. He is about to file his second AR-11 because USCIS sent the correspondences to his old address. He was lucky to even get them.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Whoa, 2-3 months? Why is the timeline still showing 11 days to 1st NOA for my city then?

Good to know on the AR-11, that's precisely what I am worried about.

So I'll file everything with the new address. Then the only question remains to me, can I do that before I actually live at the new place? Wouldn't that technically be "false information"? Because I agree with you, the earlier I get it sent in the better.

Actually it's 4 days for Phoenix... granted this depends on how diligently VJ users fill out their timeline but still I thought it would give at least a rough estimate -before Covid it did.

Yes. You can do it before you move.

It won't be considered false information. You're overthinking. USCIS isn't going to confirm your address when you send application. This is early in the phase for them to even go snoop at your address.

File as of yesterday and get in the queue. The longer you wait to file, the longer your process lingers.

And NO. It isn't 6 days. You won't receive any receipt for 2-3 months. And I always tell people "Use cashiers check like WU etc." Too many horror stories of USCIS rejecting personal checks/ CC payments and then boom, you've lost 3 months and back to beginning of queue.

That's the days to your Noa1 receipt date on the notice (ie. The date they accepted it for processing and did not refuse it) which not the same as the Noa1 received date (which is when you actually receive Noa1 in the mail).

Your receipt date will be a lot sooner than your received date.

A few months ago Noa1 was taking 10 to 14 weeks to come in the mail. It has gotten better recently but not by much.

@Jöla, I would just file everything under the new address. (I would even do it now). Do not forget to file your change of address with USPS. It does take several weeks to take on. I would sign up for USPS informed delivery. It will help you keep track of your mail.

We had the same situation. We updated our address post move, and it has been a train wreck. We've updated our address 4 times and have yet to receive any documents. I'd use a family member's mailing address or get a PO box if possible.
