I know people who have deleted the DEF after it has gone bad, the trucks you mention have no doubt done a lot more.

I can tell you the mechanics at our local Mercedes dealership are not very good.  I had a Mercedes ML350 bluetec diesel SUV.  Loved the diesel and intended to keep it for many more years.  One weakness with that 3.0l motor is oil leaks.  The seals on the oil cooler go, and to replace those $20 seals is a $3000 job(thanks to German engineering the oil cooler sits down in the V of the engine and the entire upper half of the motor comes off to get to it).  My seals failed, but I had the extended warranty so the job was done with no charge, oil cooler and turbo seals changed.  Figured I was good for several more years.

A month later while my son in law was driving the vehicle, a warning message pops up to check oil level at next refueling. He drove it home from the beach and let me know.  I checked it out and found there was NO oil on the dipstick.  A big puddle of oil under the SUV, and oil on the back of the vehicle, and oil drops going down the street...

Turns out when the oil leaks were repaired they hand tightened the oil line to the turbo but forgot to wrench it.  Worked loose and pumped out all the oil.  Fortunately the motor didn't sieze, and the dealership said it was OK as they checked compression and it was still within specs.

I decided to get rid of it.  Ordered a new SUV.....NOT a Mercedes.

I see a lot of used cars. Not a fan of BMW or Mercedes. I would rate most Chrysler products as the worst with KIA being in the mix also. Subaru and Mazda are good brands that don't get a lot of attention

Hard to imagine someone putting DEF in the fuel tank, but I guess some folks are clueless.

More common to hear about a family member putting gas in the diesel tank.

Appears now, or at least the last time I checked (last year), the only diesel SUV is the Range Rover.  I test drove a RR Discovery diesel and was not impressed.  Also, I know better than to buy a Range Rover!

Good for you. Range Rovers have an awful reputation in the Car Biz. One of my managers use to run a RR store. Oh the stories he told.

Funny story with wife.

Babe if we won the lottery and could aford any vehicle you want, what would it be.

Kind of like the Mercedes G-Class.  I will never understand the desire for that truck.

The main reason I am a proponent for doing oil changes at home is that I KNOW what oil is going into the engine, and I only use synthetic oil with 7,000-20,000 mile intervals.  I have heard too many service techs in forums detailing how customers may PAY for synthetic oil, but they get whatever the 55-gallon drum is hooked up to at the time.

Would have never bought a Mercedes, but with the way Russians are...All about the high end brand.

Shortly after she arrived here we were talking about cars.  Asked her what she thought we should buy, and her reply was " a Bentley".

My reply was Ha Ha Ha Ha.  Not a chance.

Asked her what her second choice was, and she said "a Prowler"  What the heck?  How did she even know what a Prowler was.  That one I could agree on, and shortly after that we got the Prowler.

My thoughts on the F-150 Lightning are that it's still too expensive for most people.  In order to get fast charging and more than 230 miles per fill-up, one would have to purchase the extended range model with larger battery, and it will likely cost $13k more than this base model they are touting.  Also, will people be willing to buy and install the 82-amp fast charger at home?  I mean, the 48A charger is $800 (MSRP), so how much will the larger charger cost?

Just noticed that Ford has pulled their charger from the market, at least temporarily.

Yes, I am curious about the 82A charger/inverter.  I would expect it is similar to the switch/box needed for a whole house generator, so probably a few thousand.

Well, if there is a "Green new deal" that pushes us away from ICE autos and forces expensive EVs on us, won't the government pay for a substantial portion?
