Michigan Specific Fiancé AOS

Hi!

My fiancé was finally able to have his interview at the London consulate last week and we were approved!

Now on to the next phase of the visa!

I've looked through the AOS guides, we plan to file on our own without a lawyer, and I feel mostly confident with the paperwork side of things.

I wanted to reach out to see if there were any other filers from Michigan who have recently gone through AOS to please post the steps they took once the fiancé had landed.

A few of the things I have specific questions on are:

Before they had landed did you apply for a marriage license?

Before getting married were you able to apply for a driver's license? (I've looked through past forums and it seems like this step is complicated in Michigan)

And anything else you think would be helpful! :)

thank you in advance!

First thing to do is to APPLY FOR SSN.  Within a few days of entry.  I cannot stress enough how important this is for those who enter with a K1 visa.

Start calling SSA offices near you to find one that will set an appointment for your fiance.  Unfortunately, not all SSA employees are aware that K1 visa holders are eligible to apply for SSN until day 76 of their US entry.  If you are told that your fiance is not eligible, ask to speak to a supervisor or try another SSA office.
