We got a notice back in Aug 2020 that it’s been documentarily qualified. I have a few questions:

1) If I’m eligible to be a naturalized citizen in a few months, can I convert/update the current f2a petition for my wife?

2) How long does it typically take?

3) Do I inform the embassy where it’s lodged or the USCIS?

4) Do you recommend this route?

Notification is given to the entity who is holding the petition.  Since your petition is already at the consulate,  I don't see any real advantage.

YMMV

I thought the PD was current anyway?

It is, but many embassies are still prioritizing IR visas over F2s for scheduling interviews. Definitely worth letting them know both for scheduling purposes and for getting the correct visa type listed. I would certainly let them know if I was OP. “Worst” case, nothing changes, best case they get an interview faster. Nothing to lose and potentially something to gain by letting them know.

I am hoping that the prioritising will be a non issue by then, hopefully she will have her visa, but do agree that this should be borne in mind, the future seems a bit of an unknown.

That’s what I was thinking. I’ve been watching the trend since Biden revoked the issuances made by Trump and it seems that almost all of the embassies are only processing IR-1/CR-1.

That’s why I thought it could be beneficial if I inform them once I become a citizen.

Agree,

not sure how reliable your timeline is for naturalizing but I can’t see the backlogs having been cleared in a few months, especially for F2A that was banned for a year. PD may be current but scheduling will take place in DQ order, you’d rather move into a different queue than the more backlogged one.

Do you know how long your office is taking to process naturalisation.

My thoughts

you say you can apply in a few months

check your office under this site to see processing times

for example San Franisco if that is the office you are assigned to the timeframes are 6.5 to 16 months so add this to your "a few months"
