Supporting the military doesn't automatically mean the person is an uneducated, flag-waving right-winger :D

Any two people could have totally different reasons for putting a 'Support Our Troops' sticker on the back of their vehicle....

Answers could be:

-Because my son has been flown to a foreign country by his government and his life is in danger every day.

-Because I would like to encourage drivers behind me to spare a thought for the number of troops deployed around the world.

-Because all my friends have similar bumper stickers.

The fact that the opener correlates intelligence to a vehicle owner's decision to employ a bumper sticker probably says more about their own feelings on the subject. I myself do not display a 'Support Our Troops' bumper sticker, but not because I do not 'support the troops' (excuse the dobuble negative).

Equally, I'm sure that any two US soldiers could have different reasons for serving in the military.

Answers could be:

-Because I believe it is the way to demonstrate my patriotism to my country.

-Because I want to see the world.

-Because I ticked the wrong box on enrolment day.

Whatever their reasons for joining up, I don't think anyone would doubt that US soldiers have a very diffucult and largely dangerous job.

It is worth bearing in mind that if the US were ever to come under attack, it is the same US soldiers that would be our first line of defense. I think most people would be supporting the troops if that fateful day ever came, and I suspect that they would not be debating the soldiers reasons for signing up to the service of their country. So regardless of whether people agree with the US government's foreign policies, it is important to recognise the work that the soldiers do despite their individual reasons for signing up and the reasons why a person might choose to publicly support them.

As an aside to this whole thread, I have just moved over from the UK to the US...... it is very uncommon to see bumper stickers of this nature. I would say that 'the troops' are more pronounced in the national consciousness of the US, and I do think that is a good thing.

I don't see the need of decorating our car with any sticker, it looks ugly, no matter where it stands for.

Don't see that intelligence or education has anything to do with it. They could be anyone, such as a liberal with a son or daughter in Iraq, or be ill-informed about the war and believe anything that Limbaugh or Hannity says. The type of car may be a give away. If it's a gas guzzling hummer with US flags on it too, I'm guessing the Hannity type.
