LOL! It's funny how the N. Africans use "el" and the Arabs (the Yemenis at least) use "al".

 My husband's last name begins with an "El" too. My ex's begins with an "Al". I guess I'm destined to be an el/al something or another.
Luckily my husband has a last name but instead he kept insisting on putting Usama Said on everything. I convinced him otherwise.

Along those lines and not to hijack this but.....his last name starts with "el"

I am going to change my name to his once he's here only 'cause I still have my ex's name and I don't want my family name back so do I do like "el-Jones" or ElJones or Eljones...etc.?

el.. is common... I see that alot with woman cause they keep their family name..

OMG Moody... totally insanely funny! Since my ex was Al- and now my husband now is El-. O snaps ...what a small world. I have trying to convince my husband to chnage the spelling of his name, so it is spelled more Englishy, not Frenchy... since it sounds so tarded if you read in English. But no such luck with it:lol:

Doodle: it is EL- on the passport.

AND for the record.. his name isnt Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed :P lol
Hmmmm that's a tricky one. My husband has 4 names on his passport, too (the last being a definite family name). On his I94 he only used his first and last. Everything that has come to him regarding immigration only has his first and last name on it. I would say since he has 4 names in his passport use the 4th name as the last name or wait until you file for EAD or AOS and see what name they use.

So maybe I'll Just put the 2nd and 3rd together as the middle? like I did before? But I was stumped when there was not a Middle name spot.. it made question if I was doing the right thing

hmmm. Well, my husband has 4 names on his passport, too. And we squeezed his 2nd and 3rd names together as a middle name for the petition, and they always send him mail addressed to all 4 names. 2 of his names have only 4 letters each, so I don't think they take up too much space. If they were a little bit longer, it would be harder.

We don't have the visa yet, so I don't know how it gets printed up. If they go by your applications or by the passport name. I just try to keep everything the same as the way we started out. I hope they don't start dropping names. He doesn't wanna use his grandfather's name. He doesn't like it.

O snaps Yes... el in NA and al in ME. I just get a kick out of how they also put EL on front many first names (like: El-Hadi) or whats even funnier, how they have first name with EL then a middle name with Ibn then the last name with EL (like: El-Hadi Ibn Karim El-Mamri) Neither the first nor last names are decipherable for the untrained eye.

I htink you can spell it any way you feel is correct.

One thing about these names. Lots of coutnries have different name orders that just don't fit american forms. If your SO decides to go citizenship route, he can then make a name change and correct any inconsistencies on immigration forms.

yes, like just when I took my oath, I swear they called out a lady her name was Shirkum Smith (wallahi it sounded like circumsize) It was a ####### moment! But I came to my senses, I then wondered how an Indian lady got the name Smith. But anyway

Geo has a first name and his middle name is his father's first name and they have a family last name...one of his cousins first name is the same as his family last name so its funny.. Yammine Yammine LOL sounds like a stuttttter.

i feel a little weird if we have a daughter giving her Georges for a middle name but that is tradition....we will have to comprimise maybe hpynate the middle and family name and give her a regular middle name.

My husband's first name begins with "El", even though he never uses it. I put it on the visa application using it in conjunction with his normal first name. However when I receive correspondence about the visa they address him only as "El". I'm sure this will turn into a nightmare when it comes time to get his greencard.

BTW, all the arabs I know here use ALL of their names. My boss has 4 names, he uses his first one then abbreviates the two middle names, ie...Amir A. K. Hassan.
