ok... I know in Egypt some people dont have the Traditional First and Last Name.

Their name goes by the generations of men in the family.. example.. Mohamed (name picked by mom/dad) Mohamed (father's name) Mohamed (grandfathers name) Mohamed ( great grandfathers name).. So his full name is Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed (no joke.. I actually heard of this happening)

So what do you Pick when filling out American stuff.. Drivers Licence?? SSN...?? Etc..

Just used the First name and the Dad's name?? Or First name and Great Grandfathers Name??

I am confused... and I dont want to mess up any of his legal papers...

Has anyone else dealt with this????

Luckily my husband has a last name but instead he kept insisting on putting Usama Said on everything. I convinced him otherwise.

Along those lines and not to hijack this but.....his last name starts with "el"

I am going to change my name to his once he's here only 'cause I still have my ex's name and I don't want my family name back so do I do like "el-Jones" or ElJones or Eljones...etc.?

Technically you only have to have first and last name for DL. But to make it legal and less complicated I would use all his names for the INS paperwork and SN. There is nothing weird about this. Unusual yes, but that is what it is...his name. So as I am sure he is ...be proud of it. I would not worry. Good luck

Hmmmm that's a tricky one. My husband has 4 names on his passport, too (the last being a definite family name). On his I94 he only used his first and last. Everything that has come to him regarding immigration only has his first and last name on it. I would say since he has 4 names in his passport use the 4th name as the last name or wait until you file for EAD or AOS and see what name they use.

So maybe I'll Just put the 2nd and 3rd together as the middle? like I did before? But I was stumped when there was not a Middle name spot.. it made question if I was doing the right thing

Unfortunately they don't give a lot of room on the applications to add multiple middle names. Moh squeezed in his 2nd middle name onto his EAD application only because it's on his passport. But, like I said, USCIS sends him mail addressed to Mohamed ****** not Mohamed ********** ******* ***** because of the I94.

It's tricky when they have so many names and no definite last name.

AND for the record.. his name isnt Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed :P lol

OMG Moody... totally insanely funny! Since my ex was Al- and now my husband now is El-. O snaps ...what a small world. I have trying to convince my husband to chnage the spelling of his name, so it is spelled more Englishy, not Frenchy... since it sounds so tarded if you read in English. But no such luck with it:lol:

Doodle: it is EL- on the passport.

LOL you should've seen the face on the gal at the SS office when she was trying to get everything straight. His full name would've never fit. Strange though....the SS office was the ONLY place that HAD to put MOHAMMED on his forms. I didn't quite understand that one since everything else only has the initial on it.

Big "E". His el is run together with the rest of the last name. It's not hyphenated or anything.

my husband's passport has four names - all of which are male 1st names (in other words his family has no last name). We used all on his immigration paperwork. Somewhere down the line immigration dropped one of the names  . Between that and the phonetic COLLOQUIAL spelling of his name - who knows we could still be stuck because of it. (ie: when his name was translated to french they spelled it out in slang vs. standard arabic - idiots!!!)

We had quite a discussion about how to "display" his name when he moved here. It was kinda decided for us though. When he immigrated to Canada they started using the 4th name in the string, all business cards, email, paperwork, etc. He had always used his 2nd name as his last name so it was a switch.
