Hi,

This question has been asked few times on this forum, however the answers have been more relevant to paper based filing rather than online filing the i130 petition.

I am filing i130 form online, and i don't have a middle name.
Now, as per the i130 instruction, we are suppose to fill everything in the form and not leave anything empty. On necessary sections, one can write "N/A" or "None" as per the instructions.

Since i don't have a middle name, i am trying to fill it by "N/A", however the tool/online system doesn't allow me to do the same (as it doesn't accept "/" at all)

I can't write "None", since that would make my name "JAMES NONE BOND" (e.g. James Bond).

Neither i can write "NA" or "Not Applicable", since at the final review section the name would reflect as "JAMES NA BOND" or "JAMES NOT APPLICABLE BOND".

In one of the old posts, someone recommended to use dash (-) , but the same would appear as "JAMES - BOND".

Hence, i am confused how to proceed with the same. Would appreciate response/suggestion from folks/experts/attorneys who have filed it online and didn't receive any issues.

Thanks in advance,

Jai

Was there specific instructions to do this?

You should leave it blank, how would they know your middle name is not "NA"?

That could be an actual middle name

Yes. it could actually be middle name, but the i130 instructions clearly states to fill everything in the form. Thats why the dilemma with empty MIDDLE NAME as N/A is not getting feeded in the online system, and as per instruction one can't leave it blank.

They could do a better job with the instructions when it comes to the online form since you're more restricted in what you can enter, but you have to less worry about entering NA in the online version.

Also they won't reject you for not entering it. This form was never affected by the no empty fields rule, which is no longer a rule anyway.

I would absolutely leave the middle name box blank.

Just my own preference, but on the few sections of the online form that I had to leave blank for various reasons (including my wife's middle name as she does not have one), I added a note in the additional information section which said something like:

This question is not applicable because [reason]; it has been left blank because it is not possible to enter "N/A" using the online form.

These continued issues are part of why I still recommend filing on paper.  Opinions vary.

Left it blank with no problem.  True story.  When I registered for the draft, back in the days when there was a draft, the draft board entered NMN, for no middle name, on my draft card.  To this day I still get junk mail addressed with the middle initial N.
