My wife's n400 interview was scheduled. We don't have the date yet, because we don't have the notice but the case status updated.

Anyway, I have to attend because it's a combined ROC N400 interview. But can I bring my son? He's a toddler and only stays with his mom, so he wouldn't be comfortable if we just randomly left him with a babysitter.

When you attend your naturalization interview, you should bring the applicable items listed below with you. If you fail to submit the required documents, you may be found ineligible for naturalization and your application may be denied. Please do not bring any children or other family members. Be on time for your interview – rescheduling will cause delays in processing your case. the following:

I would follow this advice.   My wife has her interview tomorrow afternoon and her letter specifically said that because of COVID-19 protocol, the applicant was the one person allowed in the building with only a few exceptions and family wasn't one of them.  Good with with yours.  :)

You can't just call the local offices. So I don't know how you expect us to do that. I'm not technically the applicant, but I'm required to attend.

Just to expand on the letter.   This is what my wife's notification of interview letter says:

COVID-19 Safety Precautions - To ensure the health and safety of all who enter USCIS offices, you must take the following safety precautions whenarriving for your interview:
• DO NOT arrive more than 15 minutes prior to your interview time. You will not be permitted entry into the office until 15 minutes before yourinterview.
• You and anyone permitted to come with you to your interview (as explained in the section, "Who should come with you?" below) must wear a facecovering that covers the mouth and nose.
• Bring a black or blue ink pen with you to your interview.

Who should come with you? Only the following people may come with you to your interview:
• If you do not speak English fluently, you should arrange to have an interpreter available by phone. Do not bring an interpreter to theinterview. If you need a Sign Language Interpreter or Certified Deaf Interpreter, call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 as soon aspossible.
• Your attorney or authorized representative may come with you to the interview, or be available via phone.
• If you have a disability and have an individual who assists you, that individual may come with you.

Hope that helps

USCIS still has social distancing and they don't allow many people in. Also, you need to think about your wife and she has to be relaxed for the interview and focus on that. Not focus on the child. Would she take the child to a job interview? No. So get a babysitter.

Quote

we just randomly left him with a babysitter.

Kids have to get used to being with babysitters or going to day care.

You could also ask friends to watch over him for a couple of hours.

That may be specifically for the N400 interview, but the ROC may be different.

To the OP, other than what @JeanneAdil suggested as to calling the info line, I would take your wife and child to the interview and let her go inside and you can stay out in the vehicle with your child.  Not all ROC interviews require the spouse to be present and in this time of COVID, I have been hearing that AOS and ROC interviews were being conducted separately (not a Stokes), so if you are needed, your wife can explain to the IO that you are outside with your child and if needed, you can come in with the child, or you and your wife can switch.

Good Luck!

It isn't a couple of hours. We live over 5 hours away from the immigration office each way. Since you don't know the entire story I'd appreciate you not trying to tell me how to parent my child! My wife is not going to be relaxed if she's worrying about my son, which she will if he's not with one of us. My wife is a stay at home mom, he doesn't have to get used to anything. My wife chooses to stay home with our son. I will dictate how my son is raised not you!

That's what I was thinking of doing. I know I have to be there due to it being a combo interview. So I'll probably call and ask and go from there.

Thanks!

You are right

I am advocating the same thing - pack the kiddo and make it an adventure.  You cannot miss an ROC interview and they are not going to make the baby wait outside either.  I do agree with sending her in first.  Good luck 👍

For those saying they won’t make the kid wait outside, you’d be surprised. Our local USCIS office (Milwaukee) was incredibly strict about their “no one other than specifically invited persons” policy even prior to Covid. I drove with my husband for ROC biometrics in July of 2019 and the block the building was on had a nice handful of people (including me) waiting around for their family members to finish their interviews/other business, and YES there were even some children that appeared to be alone outside. No toddlers, but some that looked as young as 7/8. They did have a guard who seemed to be sort of watching the younger kids, but still, definitely not a situation I would want to be in.

You’ve made it very clear that you feel we don’t know your situation enough to provide our input and advice (which is weird since you’re literally on a forum asking for it) but I would just caution not to completely shut down the possibility of there being an issues with bringing your child with you.

ROC interview requires the spouse to be there. I'm in Montana and our office is usually super relaxed. Last appointment we were early and they didn't care, even with covid going on.

The part of not knowing my situation was due to someone saying to just get a babysitter for a couple hours when it would be 10 hours just to drive there and back, not including the interview and trying to tell me how to raise my child.

Your reading comprehension is lacking if you didn't catch that.

Posted

Getting a babysitter for one day is not going to scar the child for life, honestly. Or make it an overnight and get a local babysitter for the couple of hours of the interview.  Anyway if you say the office is super relaxed and you are sure they will allow the child in why are you even asking here?

I don't see the point of you asking for help then insulting people who are genuinely trying to give you good advice - such as trying to prevent a situation where you arrive and they simply refuse to allow the child in, leaving you the two bad options of either leaving the small child alone in the car or not being able to attend the interview. Especially as your first post just said "He's a toddler and only stays with his mom, so he wouldn't be comfortable if we just randomly left him with a babysitter", and not that it's a whole day undertaking that only came out later and you then use to attack people for "reading comprehension". Then again you're hardly the first person here to shoot the messenger.
