We have done it without one. If your case is not too difficult (divorce, childreen etc.) you do not need an attourney.

Good Luck.

If you have all the papers to establish this you can do it without a lawyer, just read everything on this site and triple check each paper. :)

Good luck!

Agree with you. Most people on this site have managed without a lawyer. Even with a lawyer you get to complete all the forms yourself and supply the documents and the evidence. They can charge 1000's as well. Save your money and do it yourself. If at some stage you run into problems then hire a lawyer.

Good Luck

I would suggest you read the following article, linked at http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6769

An attorney discusses potential pitfalls with K1 visas. If you think that anything in the article may apply to you, it may not be a bad idea to consult with an imigration attorney.

Bob,

There really is no need for a lawyer, but it certainly can't hurt if you get a consultation (free one would be best), at least once.

There are many VJ members that have Thai fiancees and spouses, so you have a very large support group here. Please check out the "SAWASDEE2" thread. Also, introduce yourself to the members on that thread. We are lucky to have a very knowledgeable member who's screen name is "Yodrak". His wife is also Thai, and can help a lot.

Welcome to VJ, and hope you have a fast and successful journey!

Robert

A lot of people have given you the advice to not get an attorney because as they say if your case is straightforward you can do without. The question is, what is straightforward? How do you know for certain your case is straightforward? Even with our caseworker, we ended up with not so straightforward due to the fact that Sweden does not have birth certificates and marriage certificates. To us, our case seemed pretty easy and straightforward .. but our caseworker took care of some things for us that we had not thought about. Without her, we might have ended up with a list of RFEs instead of just the one.

The tricky thing is, some lawyers are not that good at what they do and actually cause more problems than they resolve, so you need to look around for help and not just hire the first person you talk to. Also I would check for non-profit organizations that help with immigration. They cost less and the people who work in them are focused on just immigration and to most of them, it is more than just a job.
