The investigation began in response to the departure of CNN reporter Annalyn Kurtz, Insider said, who was senior editor for CNN Business until February, according to her LinkedIn profile. Kurtz is now an adjunct professor of journalism at New York University.

Kurtz did not immediately respond to The Hill’s requests for comment and declined to comment to Insider.

The role of women at CNN was recently criticized publicly by Brooke Baldwin, the former host of “CNN Newsroom,” in an interview she gave to Ms. magazine a few weeks before leaving the network.

“The most influential anchors on our network, the highest-paid, are men,” Baldwin told Ms. “My bosses, my executives are men. The person who oversees CNN dayside is a man, and my executive producer for 10 years is a man.”

 

They must be cancelled.

It doesn't have to be cancelling of anything. But if women are saying the company may be excluding women from advancing, CNN needs to listen and investigate itself. The organization is losing out if there are qualified and talented people not moving up the ranks.

Not as if this is the first time, how many more chances are they supposed to get.

Surely how many diversity points you have is much more important that abstract issues like competency?

The problem here is that women appear to be looked over because they are women, not because of lack of competence. When leadership looks all one way -- one age, one ethnic group, one gender, one sexual orientation, etc. -- the question needs to be: why? It's not about diversity for the sake of diversity -- when organizations shut out a demographic (whether on purpose or more likely through unconscious selection bias) from leadership, they lose out on what different points of view can bring to the table. If five women and five men, for example, are equally competent at a job, or equally eligible for a promotion, why do the women not advance at the same rate as men? All things being equal, there should be something more like gender parity than 100% men and 0% women, or 80% men and 20% women. 

 

Diversifying on air talent has the benefit of making the product -- i.e. the network -- more attractive to other audiences. Fox News does a pretty good job of this, to be fair. They have many women presenting and hosting, even at the highest levels. But they had to endure several massive sexual harassment scandals to do an accounting of what they were doing wrong. MSNBC also does a decent job of it. Representation matters, because representation means $$$$$$$ through ad sales. Advertisers want to reach more diverse audiences to sell more stuff we don't need to more people in more places. All cable news is is a medium to sell us stuff, after all, whether it's Super Vitality ####### pills or Febreze.
