(Bloomberg) -- President Joe Biden said that the world will experience food shortages as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and production increases were a subject of discussions at a Group of Seven meeting on Thursday.

 

“It’s going to be real,” Biden said at a news conference in Brussels. “The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well, including European countries and our country as well.”

It seems vague to me too. Russia and Ukraine are major wheat and fertilizer exporters (as well as other grains for feeding livestock), but I think it's mostly MENA countries and maybe European countries that do the importing? It seems weird to assume it'll have a major effect on North America, but I could be wrong.

 

I wish articles like this gave us more concrete info.

I posted an article in the other thread, and you are right.  From what I read, Russia and Ukraine are responsible for about 25% of the world’s grain exports most of it going to the MENA region.  Now Russia will probably be fine, but I suspect Ukraine will not produce much this year.  The question is will the infrastructure be there for the exports, and who will pick up the slack for Ukraine.

Whereas https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_wheat_exports says Russia exported 37 million metric tons and Ukraine exported 18 million metric tons.  So we are talking about, worst case a reduction of 56 million of out of 765.8 million or a 7.3 percent reduction.  
 

This assumes other countries cannot produce more grain.  
 

Per https://www.statista.com/statistics/270024/global-stocks-of-wheat/ wheat inventory has increased from 171 million metric tons in 2013 to 276 million metric tons in 2022.  
 

Now look at https://www.macrotrends.net/2534/wheat-prices-historical-chart-data

 

Between 2013 and 2021 wheat prices have ranged between $3.80 and $7.70 a bushel. With $7.70 being the closing price of 2021.  Current price of wheat is $10.85 per bushel.  
 

Seems very convenient for the world wheat market that inventory was growing out of control and now we have a war that takes out two major exporters, one of which isn’t even a major producer.  
 

In war, as with anything else, follow the money.  Who benefits this war? Which politicians in which countries benefit if wheat prices increase? 
 

I’ve difficulty believing production could not be increased elsewhere at these prices. Especially in countries with good sources of fresh water for irrigation.  
 

For example, this must be a very popular war in a Justin Trudeau’s cabinet meeting.  Major oil and wheat producers being taken off the table in a country with a massive population of ethnic Ukrainians.

I see Nancy Pelosi's husband just bought a couple million in Tesla stock.  Not related to wheat of course, but with Manchin now signaling he may support a scaled down BBB bill and gas prices quite high, it definitely is related to the current issue.
