I once looked at taking the train from Nice to Paris, and Air France was just too convenient. Even though upon arrival at Orly, a bomb scare prevented Uber from coming to airport to pick us up for several hours. The map suggests why: France is mountainous country. There are parts of Europe where trains for passenger traffic just aren't the answer.

 

 

 

 

A lot of long-haul freight is moved by rail as much as it can, but there are a lot of underserved areas, and some things that simply cannot be moved by rail.  
 

As to road trips, I agree, when I go on a road trip, I believe every other vehicle should leave the road.  My wife is even worse, when we are driving along I80 in Iowa or Nebraska, she fumes when she sees a big rig moving into the left lane two plus miles ahead of us.

Just wait until used car prices retreat.  It's going to be a splatter. All these people that bought cars at or way over sticker.  When it crashes and they realize they are 10k or more hooked with negative equity.
