His tax return would be number 1.

Proof of any other income that is not declared on his tax return would be number 2.  If he is getting Social Security retirement, then a copy of his annual benefit letter would be required.

You need to tell us his sources of income before we can advise you on what documents are required.  What are his sources of income?

Most recent tax year is mandatory.......the others are optional.

My mother in law is very kind and sweet. she wants to be my joint sponsor since my husband is currently on unemployment. She is the only one in her household. Her 2020 income tax is 24,000$ although she is above the poverty guideline for 2020 which is 21,000$. Is she still a good candidate to have as a joint sponsor?

I would not risk it.   I would line up another joint sponsor.

Please i would appreciate a reply from someone who has experienced either an approval or rejection for having a joint sponsor who is slightly above the poverty line.

my mother in law wants to sponsor me she lives alone. This is will make us 2 and for the 2021 poverty line for a family of 2 is 21k. She made 24k in 2020. Is she still eligible to be a joint sponsor. And if I am at risk for being denied please explain why. This whole process is confusing

Hello - you already posted this question the other day and got accurate advice. I’m going to assume you are adjusting status based on having an American husband (idk your gender) If so, your husband Is your sponsor and mother in law would be the joint sponsor. There is no visa/status where someone can be primarily sponsored by an in-law. As stated in your previous post $3,000 over the poverty guideline is cutting it VERY close. The minimum income number is more of a guideline- the sponsor HAS to make (or have assets) that amount but it is up to the officers discretion. We’ve seen people get denied (need a joint sponsor) for having a much higher income than that. You can search for threads on VJ. The person who is sponsoring you (again, husband I am assuming) should be the one doing the leg work-not you-sorry that you are.

Please could you elaborate more. How is it a risk when that’s above the poverty line rate for a household of 2 people.

thanks

It’s not a cut and dried amount.   The CO has discretion.   Her income is quite low, and likely not enough to support you all.
