When we were approved we all got the stamp in our passports and the interviewer said we should go ahead and get a ss card. We waited for 2 hours in the Social Security office then they told me I wasn't in the computer on the DHS system and hadn't been processed by the DHS and that they can't do anything because they don't know if my name is my maiden name or my married name because it takes the DHS 10 days to send the info (do they have computers from 1978). I had my passsport and my marriage licence for this very problem and she said that wasn't good enough as the licence didn't have a photo id... I didn't know you could get licences with pictures on them. She asked for my Drivers Licence (which I can't get even if I could drive until I had a social security card), a US passport (hello, not American...seems my UK passport isn't good enough... even though the exact same passport was in a photo of acceptable evidence which was stuck on the wall by here desk). Then she brought over a man who is a Spanish translator to talk to me as she couldn't understand my English accent, he told me I needed a birth certificate with my married name on or an old passport in my married name, I tried to point out that I was born with my maiden name so why would me birth cert be in my married name, but it was all on deaf ears... so we left, cardless and somewhat angry. All the way home we were debating why I aren't in the INS's computers, when what should be in the mail... Welcome to America letters, which don't they only send when you're in the 'system' and have been 'processed'?.

Now if theres a 10 day waiting period why did the DHS man tell me to go and get it done asap?

You are a K-3 so it is a bit different than for us, but if you got here in April the mind boggles you would not be in the system by now... Sorry to hear you had a bad experience... Try the SS office down the road if you can, or go back on a different day, maybe the moron won't be there... Good luck!

This is normal, it is recommended to wait 2 weeks after entry into the USA for POE--DHS to update their SAVE computer records.

You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. If you go too soon your

record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet, and it will require manual verification from the

USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe. If you have waited the 2 weeks and they tell you they can not verify you arrival record via the SAVE database, you may allow them to to process it (but remember the potential delay for manual verifications). You can ask if they will check the computer again for you in a few days or return personally to have them look again -- thus eliminating the manual verification. The manual verification will require the SSA office to file a G-845 with the USCIS.

Note: SSA wont issue a card to anyone not work-authorized (K-3,K-2,K-4) they will need EAD or a Green-Card inorder for SSA to issue a number. So if you are here on a K-3, and don't have a EAD or green-card yet, don't bother trying to get SSN.

The OP is not a recent POE arriver, however the tenent may still hold true that they should wait about 2 weeks for the DHS to transfer/update information to SAVE.

Yep, realized that, but again the OP needs to wait at least 2 weeks for DHS to update the SAVE database.

Thanks for the replies, been here 7 years.. just became a LPR. I guess thats what I get for listening to my interviewers advice
