Those bars must be on the windows cause they are scared of the police ?

Just popping in to drop an odd little factoid about bars on the windows LA. So I've heard most of these were added in the 70s-80s when things were... bad (worse than now). And also have you seen a documentary on Netflix about the Night Stalker? It was hot and there wasn't air con, so people left the windows open, but everyone was terrified of being serial killed, so they put bars on the windows so he couldn't get in. There's been a push, so I've heard to get rid of the old relics of bars, which just seem like a fire trap to me.

Because those crapbox houses don't even have a garage.

I didn't get it myself, as I cannot imagine how hot it would get in CA.

Anyway that guy apparently sent sales of burglar bars, deadbolts, and other kinds of locks through the roof. They didn't put in regulations about that in CA fire code for some time.

See the same thing in Hialeah.  It's a totally Cuban city now.  Stuff disappears every night.

As the (Puerto Rican) guy that gave us my wife's AOS interview said "You know, there is one place here in FL that you need a passport to go into.  It's called Hialeah."

Not joking.  He actually said that, but my wife didn't get it.

My family was living in the San Fernando Valley (North Hollywood) during the time of the Night Stalker and have told me it was absolutely terrifying. I was an infant when he was caught. About 2 weeks after I was born, a mom and her 11 year old son were attacked about 5 miles away from where we lived. Then there was an attack in Sun Valley a couple months later, which was even closer. A mom and dad and a little boy -- the dad didn't make it. Obviously I have no memory of this but my parents say it was one of the worst times in their lives, worrying that something would happen to us. The one saving grace was that we lived in a complex that was two stories of apartments clustered around a courtyard, and there were big security gates at the front and back. We also lived on the second floor. My mom impressed on me when I went away to college the importance of never, ever taking a hotel room or apartment or buying a house where the sleeping quarters were on the first floor. No surprise that the house they eventually bought had two stories.

I do remember our apartment -- we moved out when I was five and we had only a window AC unit in my parents' bedroom. When we first moved to Burbank, the house only had wall units that had been put in after it was construction, so really only the bedrooms and living room had cooling. Ceiling fans do a decent job of moving the cool air around. Eventually my dad installed central air and it was like, oh wow, the 20th century is awesome.

My first post-college apartment was in Pasadena, and it also only had a wall unit that had been sort of shoved into the wall, not original, and it broke down all the time. Ceiling fans/standing fans do the trick if you use them with a portable unit. Bear in mind as well that there are really only 4 months of the year that are super hot, July - October, and the rest of the time it's perfectly fine.

Of course I now live with someone who is a thermostat tyrant so the answer to too hot in the summer is "take a cold shower." Living near the beach though limits the number of truly hot days. I want to say we had fewer than 10 really hot (90F or above days) here last year.

so what is the thermostat set at by lord piledriver?  here during the summer it is 79, winter it is 69 during the day and it drops to 64 at night.

It is "OFF" in summer and "OFF" in winter. No, generally we only turn the heat on in winter to 67 if we really need it (though I will occasionally blast it at 70 for 20 minutes if he is out of the house), and in summer I draw the line at 76. It makes me feel really unwell if it's much warmer than that inside. Under that, I will take a shower and sit in front of the fan as directed. I can deal with lower temperatures better than warmer ones, so we try to sleep with the window open as much as possible at night. It is the extremely rare evening that we need AC overnight here (I think it was twice last year) -- fans do the job perfectly well when it's 65F outside. I don't think I put the heat on overnight one time last year. I just close the window and get out another blanket. It's not so much a "save money" or "save the planet" thing, but just that if we don't need to put strain on the grid, why should we?

It's the American Way, that's why, LL ma'am.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Damn, that's freaking cold.

Couple of times this winter I got up in the am and thought it was so cold I needed to turn the heat on.  Looked at the thermostat and saw it was 70 inside.  Decided it was better to just put a warm sweater on than run the heat.  Couldn't live without my mattress heater.  Nothing better than sliding into a nice prewarmed bed.
