I'm looking for a DEET-free mosquito repellent that's safe for kids and can be applied to the skin. Anyone tried a product that they would recommend? Cheers.

The only mosquito repellant that I have heard that is supposed to work and is DEET free would be Avon's Skin-So-Soft.

I agree with the Avon suggestion, you can mix it 50/50 with alcohol, (I forget with which kind - just know for sure not Jack Daniels... ) and put it in a spray bottle.

Avon has a line of Skin So Soft (DEET FREE) insect repllents, some even contain sunscreen. It's what we use in our house. Hubby is allergic to mosquito bites, to the point of needing antibotics.

I think I am going to try some of this!

The bites I am getting are horrible- they have never been like this in my life.

Another vote for Avon SSS all the way. It is amazing stuff, though a bit stinky which is probably why you don't get bitten.

It is 3:36 am. I woke myself up scratching at a bug bite on my hand, it is red and swollen and so itchy it is driving me crazy. I am still on antibiotics for the one I had on my wrist- that one is doing much better.

I always got attacked back home too- but I didn't have reactions like this.

I'm making notes of the Avon. Last year I used something that made my nailpolish melt off. You know that can't be good

On our honeymoon we took a nice pittoresk hike along a (Michigan) lake. By the end of the walk I was using my shirt to frantically fight off bugs while running for the car and ended up with about 12 bites. One of them made my arm swell up twice it's size. We were in the middle of nowhere and the only thing I could find in the local gasstation was vinegar, to take the sting out. When I explained how and what they told me to be thankful a walk was all we were taking *cough*

American bugs must REALLY like foreign blood; my husband was leisurely strolling taking photographs and I was fighting a regular SWARM!

Anyway, Stacey, I feel your pain :(

insect repellents that contain DEET are your best bet at keeping away the mozzies that may be carrying the West Nile Virus. Avon Skin So Soft only works for about 10 minutes, and only because its an oil and the mosquitoes can't bite through it until it absorbs into your skin.

Here's the CDC info on insect repellents and West Nile Virus http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/q...t_repellent.htm

And If you don't believe the CDC, how about Snopes? ;)http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/skeeters.asp

If for some reason you avoid DEET because you think it is harmful, imagine West Nile Virus encephalitis. Studies have shown in recent years that DEET is even safe to use on children as young as 2 months.

Personally, I've used the Avon bug repellent (got a free bottle of it when we visited KOA in New Bern NC) and it just did not work at all! We were eaten alive! We threw that in the garbage and got out the Watkins Insect Repellent (with 29% DEET) and didn't get a single bite. Watkins, OFF Woods, or Musquol, or anything with DEET is what we use. I'd rather not have my brain go to mush because of a hungry mosquito!

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

Earlier I agreed with the Avon SSS suggestion although I did not say why... I spent 13 weeks in USMC boot camp on Parris Island SC in 1983 during the months of July-Sept. This included 2 weeks in the swamp in tents. I can not speak for the pre-made Avon repellant. I can say I mixed Avon SSS 50/50 with alcohol and it worked great. It did not wear off in 10 minutes. The DI’s wanted to know how I found out about it as that is what they used. My recruiter was a DI and he told me about it. Of course, now I have dated myself… things may have changed by now…

If I use something with DEET I personally select a product with the lowest percentage. Certainly, DEET is reported to be safe if applied as directed. I do not think most people read and follow the directions…
