This is great! I wondered what would happen at the border. We have 4 of us and a dog. 2 adults 2 kids. We will be at the Ontario/Michigan border. Did you just leave the dog in the car when you went inside to activate visas?

Yup, we sure did.  She did really well and served as the peaceful division between the kids in the back seat since they were stuck in there for 4 days LOL!

Oh good. I'm so glad it was easy at the border. We'll make sure to have all her rabies vaccine info. What paperwork do you give them for visas? Just the package the consulate sends you after being approved that has paperwork, passport and visas? And proof you paid that immigration fee?

Everything is electronic.  You'll get your passport back from the consulate with the machine readable visa adhered on Page 27.  There will be an annotation that says "IV docs in CCD" (I was IR 1, so IV).  I had all of my paperwork and my xray, but they didn't need them at all.  You just take the ole passport in and they pull the electronic records from the Consulate database, stamp your passport and send you on your way.

As for doggo, just make sure the rabies vaccine is older than 30 days I believe it is.  You'll have to check what the Florida requirements are too.  You might need to quarantine the dog, but I doubt it.  Canada isn't a high risk country.

Sorry another question...we have to import our car? It's Canadian. What do we have to do for that? Do you do that before we go over or after? Do we have to have paperwork for that when we cross over at the border too?

Yes, you have to import your car.  There are some other threads about it.  If it's financed, you have to find out from your lender if they'll allow you to bring it across the border.  From there, you need a letter of compliance from the manufacturer stating it meets EPA regulations.  From there, you need to fill out form HS-7 and form 3520-1.  Once you have that, it's whatever the state you're moving to requires.

The biggest issue most Canadians have is whether their car is TPMS compliant.  If it's not, it's usually cheaper to just sell the car in Canada and buy a new car in the States.  You'll get dinged in the States, too, if you try to trade it in.  The dealership will make up some ####### about "but it's a Canadian vin and I have to change the dash cluster".  I *might* have dealt with this before 😳

Oh ok I read online that if you own the car for over a year and can prove it and that it meets immersions regulations you don't have to import it/pay fees.

How are we supposed to drive there to move if we can't bring our car? That's how we're going, we won't be flying.

Oh no, you still have to import it.  But you're less likely to have to pay duty.
