N-400 Race Question

Hello! I'm filling out the N-400 form to apply for citizenship, and I am concerned with the race question.

I don't want to answer it, because I believe we all belong to one human race, and this question shouldn't be mandatory to answer.

Can I skip answering this question, or can I select all applicable race boxes, instead of selecting just one, without it negatively affecting my application?

Well it says right there at the top of that section: "USCIS requires you to complete the categories below to conduct background checks." (Bolding mine). So you HAVE to answer or else your application will not proceed. For the race question specifically, it does say, "Select ALL applicable boxes." So if you're bi- or multi-racial, you can check off the ones that apply to you specifically. I get where you're coming from with the whole "We are all one race" philosophy and I do agree with that. But this application - and this question specifically - is not asking about us about our beliefs.

If it's required you have to answer it. If it's not required then skip over it.
