Hi Everyone!

I have read through this forum and didn't find a question similar to mine so I thought I'd post my own.  I am filing for an ITIN for myself.  My husband (American citizen) and myself (Canadian citizen) live in Canada and have for the last 6 years. We are in the IR1 application process and need to get caught up on his American taxes.  In the forms, it asks for identification documents that I'm submitting (passport, drivers license etc).  Further into the instructions, it indicates that the original documents will be mailed back to me.  Is that for residents within the USA?  I am slightly nervous about mailing my one and only passport in the mail, for months on end (or however long it takes to get my ITIN processed).

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated :)

Have a great day!!

You can try to find an agency that will certify a copy of the passport and send that instead. It needs to be one accepted by the IRS.

Hi GeauxGirl,

You can request certified true copies of your Canadian passport from the (Canadian) Passport Service Office.  You'd have to turn in your original Canadian passport, but would get it back in 10 business days, along with your certified copies.  The fee is $45 for each request of 1-3 certified true copies of your Canadian passport, so it's most cost effective to request 3 copies.  You can then apply for your ITIN by sending in one of your certified true copies, instead of your actual Canadian passport.

(In the future, if you ever need to renew your Canadian passport and think you may need certified true copies... it's probably best to renew the passport and request certified copies at the same.)

Please consult this page to find a convenient certifying acceptance agent; have the taxes and the W-7 form completed to bring to an appointment with the agent of your choice. No mailing of passport necessary https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/acceptance-agents-canada
