Interesting.  Is the top earner David Hasselhoff?

Top paid LA lifeguards earn up to $392,000 annually: report

Life’s a beach for these California lifeguards.

The highest-paid Los Angeles lifeguards earn up to $392,000 annually — and dozens of others rake in more than $200,000 a year, according to an investigation by Forbes.

Seven LA County lifeguards earned more than $300,000 in taxpayer dough by tapping into overtime pay in 2019, the latest year available, Forbes found.

Meanwhile, 82 of the sun-soaked public employees made more than $200,000 during the same year, according to the outlet, which cited data obtained by its own auditors.

Blame a system that enables (and may even demand) excessive overtime instead of hiring to adequately meet its labor needs with the appropriate number of hourly workers. Sure, there will always need to be the flexibility of overtime available because people get sick, they have family obligations, they quit without warning, but numbers like that mean something is wrong with staffing.

I also try to get all my Los Angeles-related news from the NY Post, lol. To be fair, the NYT is terrible about this, at least a couple of articles a year about "I moved to California and OMG the pizza sucks and there's so much traffic and there's kombucha on tap and people do yoga everywhere and someone asked me if I had had a B vitamin injection recently." It's a running joke out here. The funny thing in my experience is there's so much "LA sucks" energy coming from New Yorkers but honestly, nobody here thinks too much about living out there.

In the end, it is cheaper to pay the overtime than to bring in more people with large fixed costs related to benefits.  FWIW, I got the initial story from the Armstrong and Getty program, and then searched on the story and the NYPost came up.

There, $300,000 probably buys them a crackerbox-sized apartment and Ramen for meals.

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

A good friend of mine moved back to California earlier this year. She is making almost twice as much as she made here but she thought she would end up paying a lot more than double in expenses. Federal taxes will hurt on the double salary too. The weather is nicer though, and they are closer to friends and family. Guess it depends on what you are looking for. You certainly can't just go by salary alone when it's a place like California.
