Hello,

The IR1 visa for my husband has been issued on his current passport. We recently found out that when his resignation at his job goes through he will have to make a new passport. The issue is that his visa would be on his old passport then. Will that be fine when he travels or does the visa have to be transfered to his new passport that will be made?

Thank you.

Why does he need a new passport when he resigns from his job?  Is his current passport about to expire?

It's a requirement after he resigns which we didn't know before. He was employed by the government and we recently found out that after the resignation is accepted he will need to make a whole new passport

Can I ask what country he is from?

Passport can just be renewed if is expired, is not something that you just change when you want. Something is not right about this

No issue. Just carry both passports

The country is Pakistan. He went to the passport office and it was made clear that a new passport would be made after his resignation from current job is accepted. He would no longer be a government employee and they will issue a new passport. There is nothing we can do about it even if it doesn't make sense. We thought they would change the information from the database, not issue a whole new passport.

It seemed a bit confusing since it would be his first entry into the country. I hope no problems arise

In Brazil passports generally expire before the visa does, so people always get a new passport and carry the old passport with the valid visa (tourist visa). This might be a similar situation.  But I would still email the embassy and ask.

I would call the US embassy before travel to make sure what to do in this case. Looks like super different from my country so don't risk just traveling without knowing if is ok or not. Call or email them.

Is it because he currently has a diplomatic passport, or whatever is the equivalent in Pakistan?

As others have stated, he could keep his old passport and present that.   But that is if the government lets him keep it.  By what you described, it may be the case that the government will require him to surrender his current passport.

First, find out exactly what is going on.  What is his current passport (what type is it), why does he need to get a new one when he quits, and will he be able to keep the old passport.  After finding that out, contact the embassy and ask their guidance.
