Hi there,

A friend of mine is filing for N-400. They dont speak English that well.  They asked me if I can attend the interview (when it comes up) with them.  Can I?

I'm not a lawyer and I am not an "Accredited Representative"

Form G-28 says in section of "Other Representatives":

"Other Representatives Individuals seeking to appear as reputable individuals may not use Form G-28. They must obtain permission from DHS to appear on behalf of an applicant, petitioner, requestor, beneficiary or derivative, or respondent. DHS will require the individual establishes he or she meets the definition of a reputable individual at 8 CFR 292.1(a)(3)."

What does that mean?

Is there a way?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

And to clarify, they want me to be an interpreter during the English portion of the civics test as they are not proficient in English and will be opting for the test in their native language (they meet the 50yrs old / 20y PR rule).

My understanding is that, unless the applicant is exempt from the English requirements, an interpreter cannot be present.  If exempt, I believe you can serve as interpreter.

Isn't English proficiency required?  And after 20 years, they still are not proficient enough to take the test?  I would encourage them to maybe take some classes ahead of the test.  At 50, and having been here since age 30, there is no reason not to be by now.

Thanks Lucky Cat.  I see am understanding criteria, he is exempt.

If I can serve as interpreter, that would be ideal.

Anyone know criteria/qualification of interpreter for naturalization test?  Is being native speaker in both languages adequate, or does interpreter need to be certified/registered?
