Is that a new requirement that you have to send in a certified copy of the marriage certificate for AOS?

Well, it's what's on the VJ guide and it's what I have on hand. I'm on mobile right now, so it's hard to re-re-review the USCIS form instructions, but yeah, I'll be sending in the certified copy.

Photocopies suffice per USCIS instructions (as long as seal/stamp is visible, that part I only read on VJ) but just for the peace of mind of many applicants from getting a possible RFE, they send in a certified copy of the marriage certificate. 😊

Copies. You should submit legible photocopies of documents requested, unless the Instructions specifically state that you must submit an original document. USCIS may request an original document at the time of filing or at any time during processing of an application, petition, or request. If USCIS requests an original document from you, it will be returned to you after USCIS determines it no longer needs your original.

NOTE: If you submit original documents when not required or requested by USCIS or the Immigration Court, your original documents may remain a part of the record, USCIS or the Immigration Court will not automatically return them to you, and your original documents may be immediately destroyed upon receipt.

6. Marriage Certificate and Other Proof of Relationship

If you are filing Form I-485 as the derivative applicant spouse of the principal applicant, you generally must submit a photocopy of your marriage certificate issued by the appropriate civil authority where the marriage took place. Refugee derivative applicant spouses do not need to submit a photocopy of the marriage certificate. There are also some immigrant categories that require the principal applicant to submit a marriage certificate (for example, K-1 nonimmigrants (person admitted to the United States as a fiancé(e)), abused spouses and children under the CubanAdjustment Act (CAA), Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (HRIFA) dependents, and abused spouses and children under HRIFA). See the Additional Instructions for more category-specific information.

Hi, @Adventine. Sorry to interject in this post, but I find myself in the same situation as you. Got married in TN, and I'm wondering which document to bring to the interview. Did you take the Marriage License (with green frame) or the Certificate of marriage (all black and white)? I'm asking because I do have the original marriage license, but not 100% sure about the marriage certificate as all copies look exactly the same to me and it is hard to differentiate if I have the original or not.  I just want to play safe and turn in the correct document, so your guidance in telling me which one they required at interview would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much in advance 🙏🏻
