Ive only read of 1 instance of PC accepted.

Call back both offices in Austin, see which one has a "drop box". Leave a letter with your application and NC, ask for trackable return.

Mine outside LA sent it back UPS in a hard envelope.

We decided to call again and told them we felt it had been rejected in error because on the state department website it clearly states that the passport card is proof of identity and citizenship. To our surprise the person on the phone agreed and said it was a mistake. They are supposedly processing it now, fingers crossed!

Then they send you a new SS card, (why? I dont know.) within 2 weeks, from Maryland.

For a lot of us the old card would say something along the line that a work authorization is required, the new card would remove that after becoming a citizen.

The whole process took a week, I first applied for my passport and passport card, I then filled out the SSN application and mailed it off with a letter stating that I am updating my citizenship status and included my passport card as evidence of citizenship. So if anyone is worried about SSA loosing their naturalization certificate, you don't have to mail that, just mail your passport card if you applied for one.

thank man, ur idea is brilliant, i did and sent all document exactly the same what u wrote in ur document and it worked here in san bernardino CA

i sent PC+cover letter and form SS-5.

so they sent me back PC along with receipt letter from SSA, and it said just wait for about 2 week for new SSA.

thank any way,

Hi, how did you send your docs to SSA? I called them and they said I can actually drop by their mailbox... not sure if that's a faster way than mailing via USPS.

thank you!

SSA web site states you might be able to get in-person appointment if you need a replacement social security card for a few reasons including filing tax return. Did anyone try that route and get an appointment successfully? I tried a few weeks ago and didn't make it. But I didn't use filing tax return as a reason. I'll probably try it again next week.

Maybe someone can enlighten me, but... generally speaking, what is the urgency to update your citizenship status with SSA?

If it is to have the mention "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" removed, this should have happened already once you became a LPR and showing your green card, no? Unless you are of a certain age to claim SSA benefits and need to update your status as soon as possible?

I called the SSA local office of my area inquiring about an Express Interview, and despite citing the "official memo" about eligibility criteria to get one (citizenship status update being one), the agent told me they are prioritizing first application or benefits claims. He said to mail the documents in, but when I mentioned my reluctance to send in my original Certificate of Naturalization, he said he understood and advised me instead to wait until full reopening, so I can show up in person. He also even mentioned that he's seen lots of people "waiting for years before updating their citizenship change with SSA".

Because I don't sense any urgency to do so, I will wait for SSA offices full reopening. By then, I will likely have my passport too, so I can decide whichever proof of citizenship (NC or PP) to take with me to the office.

For me, it is simply about getting all my ducks in a row as the opportunity presents itself

  • Naturalization - done
  • Receive passport and passport card - ongoing
  • change citizenship status at the SSA using passport card - tba
  • update driver license- tba

I’m the sort of person at home and at work who doesn’t like to leave tasks hanging if I have the ability to complete them with the tools that are already available.
