Hi VJers,

My fiancee's packet 3 was sent from HCMC on June 7th. She hadn't received it by June 28th. I was visiting her during the month of June but had to leave June 29th. Since she hadn't received packet 3, I told her to go by the consulate and pick one up. After she took me to the airport, she went to the consulate, picked up packet 3, filled it out, and returned it to them.

I don't understand why it takes about 10 days for letter to go from Texas, USA to Vietnam over 3 weeks to go from HCMC to Vinh Long (about 3 hours away). A representative from the consulate told me on June 26th that it normally takes about 1 month. This doesn't really make any sense to me.

Anyone have any information on the situation regarding the extremely slow mail within Vietnam?

John,

I think the slow delivery of mail has to do with the way they do things at the consulate. Maybe as the process the applications, they mark them as "packet 3 sent on [today's date]" in their computer database, but they actually send the packets in batch, which could be 1-2 weeks later. When you call them, they quote you the date on the computer, and nobody knows the actual sent date.

I'm just speculating; it could be completely wrong. The point is I don't believe mail is all that slow.

I agree with Sealedkiss. I called the consulate and the told me Packet 4 was sent out June 16. And my wife told me that she received Packet 4 on June 29, with the postal stamp of June 26. So it took only 3 days to go from HCM to Ben Tre (close to Vinh Long), which I think it should be. So the problem is at the consulate, because it took 10 days for the mail just get out of the consulate.

For your case, it could be a lag at either consulate, or HCM post office, or at Vinh Long post office, or at all of them. In my experience, I never lost a mail, or have any longer-than-expected-wait for my mail sending/receiving to/from Vietnam.

The mail sucks in 'Nam because they're a bunch of lazy bastards who work within the postal service. Plus, look at the roads in 'Nam, they're terrible! I remember when I use to mail stuff to my fiancee from the states, the US postal service would ask me if I wanted 'next day', or 'overnight,' I always told the worker...sure, maybe it'll get to vietnam over night, but, whether or not I send it over night, or I send it the slowest way, it'll still sit in saigon for 3 weeks before they do anything on their part with it...might as well save some money and send it regular.

HCMC has BATCH Mailing! They say they send out the Package on XYZ in their computer system. However, all mails/packages are sitting in the mailroom waiting for the Postal to come by once/twice a week to pick up and mail out. So your package may be noted "sent June 16", but it probably was picked up on the 19th, then shipped on the 26th and gets to your honey on the 29th.

Trust me, this is the best we get with the Postal Service in VN in years. Enjoy!

If you remove the flag under your nick, your mails would arrive the next day- no extra charge.

Hell no heeeee. You have to love the Flag cuz it was where you had found your honey!.. If the mail in VietNam is so fast, it will out run the USA. ;) Then it will be no point of moving to the US. IF you happen to remove the flag and make sure send it to me, so i can bring it down to the Little Saigon this weekend............ FREE OF CHARGE!!! HO CHU TICH MUON NAM :)
