I was in Brookstone today and as usual I stood in front of the travel section for about an hour going back and forth in my head trying to justify buying a few things that looked super cool. And as usual I left with nothing in my bag. lol.

Thought we could have a thread stating what helped you in your transatlantic travel.

The thing I kept wanting to get was a tempurpedic pillow. It was $75 though and I already have one I got from Target but the difference is my Target one needs me to blow it up. I felt like such a royal dweeb on the airplane huffin' and puffin' to get that thing inflated and the tempurpedic one is already done.

So....what things have you brought with you on your flight that made all the difference, or what tips can you give an infrequent transatlantic traveler? :help:

a pen.

Sounds silly, but I don't know how many times I've passed my pen around to others to fill in their customs forms...

and take a coat. Either you will be very cold, or if not, you could use it as a pillow :) and you wont look silly trying to inflate it ;P (Unless... you DO try to inflate the coat :P)

The Beginning

September 29th, 1999 - 'hooked' up with Dave after chatting with him for about a year online.

July 23rd, 2005 - Dave comes over for the wedding on July 27th at the beach :)

Sometime in December, he sends off I-130 to Texas and promptly leaves me in the dark like a mushroom x.X...

I bought TSA approved locks and these neon colored strips of tape from Magellan's. The locks keep those who don't belong in my luggage out...or at least if they are in a rush, it makes thieves less likely to work on those than someone's that are unlocked. The neon tape really came in handy as 99.9% of all luggage looks the same. Found mine the minute they hit the carousel.

I really wanted to get a Frommer's travel book but I already spent way too much already, and besides, I had a personal tour guide

Visine, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, body spray, anti-bacterial soap, hair gel, one change of clothes including socks & panties, iPod, pen, washcloth, small towel, bedroom slippers, light jacket, Q-tips, & a couple of breakfast bars. There's more. But I like to be prepared if I get stuck at an aiport or I arrive and my luggage didn't. It's happened before. Experience has made me the wiser! ;)

Depending on how far you are travelling (> 9 times zones?) see the doctor and get something like Ambien, if appropriate, to help you get onto local time faster and easier.

I use it, usually after arriving home (outbound is so exciting I pop into the 12 hour time shift very quickly and pretty easily) one or two days to help the adjusment. Without it, getting over the 12-hr time shift takes me about 10 days. With it, 3-4, sometimes less. Ambien is a miracle drug.

I've had good results with Melatonin, which you can get without a prescription. Airport shops have a ton of it.

Slippers to wear for the longest part of the flight and neon green luggage tugs were the 2 things I found the most helpful.

definitely always bring this on board:

ipod, book and/or magazines, sweater, blow-up pillow(they take up much less room than those tempurpedic pillows), a snack, bottle of water (that you buy inside the airport), and a pen/paper to write if i'm bored and the pen for the forms you fill out when you arrive to an international location.

also in my carry-on stored above i always put all my most precious luggage. camera, laptop, make-up, breakables, medicine, money, etc. anything that would be extra awful if the airline were to lose your luggage.
