This guy isn't the first mass murderer who had a history of prior issues. He threatened to kill his entire high school wrestling team. Maybe those types of warning signs should be taken more seriously.

If he was 18 at the time and was not prosecuted, then what was the school doing?

Yes indeed, but to imply the FBI is somehow responsible is absurd

Well they are responsible for the background check. Maybe threatening to kill a bunch of people is something that should pop up on that check.

Why would that pop up in a search of his records ? I doubt it was ever reported and still you have to have enough to charge them

Bingo! Once we start identifying some of the problems, then maybe we can progress to some solutions. Personally, I never threatened to kill anyone on my high school football team, and that was the biggest group of immature angry irritating obnoxious guys I've ever been around. I probably did hit a few people harder than I needed to, but usually because they did the same to me.

If the suggesting of killing another person ever comes out of a persons mouth, people should take it seriously. If it's credible in any way, that should be something that stays with them.

Some little kid apparently threatened to kill his class mates, big issue, I would look that more to media, but I do not know.

Just shows it is a multi faceted issue and cosmetic details of a certain gun type is not a solution.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

this case isnt necessarily all about the guns issue, nor is it all about the mental health issue, both played a part, but from what i have read, he was bullied pretty mercilessly as a kid (yes high school age is still just a kid) because he was muslim, because he was from syria, and i would imagine that sort of thing stays with you for a long time. i still remember all sorts of things directed at me when i was a kid from the racial slurs, guys trying to bully me, etc.... over time it can contribute to a feeling of isolation, loneliness, and in some cases, like this one, paranoia. it seems that is the common thing that it seems most of these school shooters have in common, being bullied or mocked because they are different.

if you want to stop these, try teaching your kids not to be jerks to other kids. and while you are at it, try not being jerks to other people in general for no reason. this isnt something the government can solve without people in this country learning to have self reflection, but who am i kidding, its never going to change because most people in this country are self centered celebrity worshipping ignorant simpletons with the attention span of a gnat

I understand some of the issues, but he struck out at random helpless innocent victims who had never even met him. I get that he had anger and was victimized himself, but he transferred that anger from a know aggressive source and took it out on a less threatening one. That is a primary mental health issue, and we fail to recognize it's significance because we just don't deal with mental health issues well as a society.

Displaced aggression is a known psychological issue, and it is definitely common in mass shootings, but I disagree that it only plays a part. The guns are a factor because these guys shouldn't even have access to them and we realize that too late, but failing to recognize and deal with mental health issues seriously is the central issue we have to start addressing.

this, right here, absolutely right....we need to go to the source, and that is to prevent kids from feeling like that in the first place, and the solution isnt just a binary choice, it has a lot of interlocking factors in it that all need to be addressed simultaneously or it will just keep going round and round in circles.

Unfortunately, the parents are often incapable of teaching their kids not to be jerks, because they are jerks.
