My wife and I want to divorce. We got married in Russia and moved to Miami. She lived in Miami with me for a year and 2 months before returning to Russia. This was 3 years ago and I havent bothered to finalize the divorce. We remain friends and would like to finalize the divorce quickly and painlessly. What to do? (Don't want to deal with an attorney)

Thank you

Divorce in America isn't exactly tricky but almost always lawyers get involved. Does your wife live close to the ZAGS where you were married. If so, she may be able to see them and get the divorce registered through ZAGS. That may or may not be best for you. If you choose this path, it seems to me that you would probably want her to mail you a copy of the divorce decree, preferably with a certified translation, should you ever want to get married again.

But we're not divorce attornies around here, and I for one don't know how it works in Russia. You might want to post on the Russia forum.

I did my own divorce here in Colorado. All you have to do is go to the city and county clerk of your county and ask the county clerk for a divorce packet. You fill that out and pay the processing fee. If she is not able to show up in court for the hearing and then she will forfeit her rights in the hearing to the court of the law. Read your packet carefully and read up on the laws of your state because I am not sure if Florida is a "No Fault" state or not. In Colorado, they do not care why you are getting a divorce and you can claim "ireconicable differences" and be done with it, but if you live in a state that you have to have a valid reason for the separation then it can get more involved. You can do this by yourself if you are careful to read and study the laws and follow the information given to you in the divorce packet. When you are done filling it out, you take it back and there will be a filing fee. Every state is different though. my divorce cost me $400.00 totally after it was all said and done which was pretty damn good.
