Or even if she likes the big cheesy public show thing, there's just so many ways it could go wrong, that it's no use stressing about it when there's an international visit and you're already engaged.

well the proposal isnt going to be a huge surprise as it has already been done on the phone. I think the first thing you should do is buy an engagement ring. Yes you may not know her size or what she would prefer, but you can always return to the jewellery store when she is with you so buy something you think she will like, simple and elegant. You could plan a special day for her so breakfast in bed with something really indulgent like smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with a single rose on a tray. You could prepare the food for a picnic in advance (or go to Marks & Spencer) and then take her for a lovely lunchtime picnic somewhere remote and scenic, followed by a drive around the local area, showing her points of interest or taking her to places you frequent or that were part of your childhood perhaps. In the evening you could arrange to take her to a nice restaurant and there present her with the ring you bought. It would be a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Wow. Britty, will you propose to me? :)

No, seriously, I think any girl would love the romance of you already having the ring picked out, even if it's not her size. It's so much more special that way, like "wow, you thought that much of me to prepare?" It's not even about the ring, it's about the idea behind it.

I really would rock at proposals wouldnt I ???

Why not take her to the lake district, Lake Windermere is lovely and you can go out on the lake on a boat, maybe take a small cooler bag with a bottle of champagne and a couple of glasses and do the proposal either on the boat or at the side of the lake.

I know when my american husband went to the lake district he though the scenery was beautiful, and to be honest I think its a little less tacky than Blackpool prom...if ya catch my drift ;)

Oh, I second the Lake district! Well, basically I second the entire post :)

Yes, a boat on a lake ... a blanket for when it's chilly ... and a picnic with champagne and strawberries would be tops!

Just be careful with the kneeling down. Boats tend to be wobbly ;)

Also, not too far from there (I think): Castlerigg

I'm going to 3rd the Lakes.. I was taken there by my Lancaster friends, and it's amazing.. simply amazing.. THere would be loads of secluded places there to just bend down and pop the question!!

One note on the whole "proposal on the phone thing" .. it's the element of surprise that will give you extra points. When I got my ring it was when i least expect it.. I though when he arrived ( I even knew he had bought it), he'd jump out of the car and give it to me - but he waited and I kept begging and he said "not now".. so it was such a thrill when he DID surprise me Christmas Eve (I had give up at that point).. We gals love the surprise!
