I have a CR1 visa in my foreign passport, on which I entered the US a week ago... I'm still waiting for my GC to be mailed to me...

Can I travel outside of the US without the GC or do I have to wait for it first?

I heard that mailoffices have been given instructions not to deliver green cards if the person is absent....

You just got in the US 1 week ago and you want to travel already ? I am not familiar with CR1 visa but I would definitely wait for the green card.

Kities,

When you entered the USA the immigration officer at the POE put an endorsement on the visa that turns the visa into a temporary greencard, so you do have a greencard of sorts and are free to travel.

When you arrived in the US on your CR1 visa you should have got a I-551 stamp(Temp Greencard) in your passport.... this is good for travel and work until your Greencard arrives.....

I thought that until I get either a Permanent resident card or a work permit I cannot work on the CR1 visa in my passport....

At least that's what I've been told by a Social security office...

Absent? How would the USPS know if you were in absent or not?

Good evidence is usually when the mail starts mounting up in the mailbox!

it usually takes about 4 weeks to get the green card.... I am not sure if you checked the box on the DS-230 form concerning the SSN but if you haven't got that in a few weeks, I would go to the Social security office and apply for one...

like was mentioned the I-551 stamp in your passport (not the cr1 visa) acts like a temporary green card for up to one year...

MarilynP,

The visa becomes a temporary greencard when endorsed by the CBP officer at the POE.
