Yes I was also confused.

But regardless of any of that! Thank you for stating it is not really necessary to have my passport with me. It also will take some time for all of this. I will send my passport off and start the process for the N400. I will photocopy any stamped pages and upload! Thanks again.

No, please do not misunderstand, you do need to have it with you if it was used for any entry to the US from the time you got your immigrant visa. (They may or may not ask to look at it.) But the fact that it has your maiden name doesn’t matter.

Okay! So it’s best to wait just in case I have a I-751 interview, then update my British passport and then start my N-400 application? I’m a little confused as you said it must be with me. I will need to send it off for them to update it. So it will not be with me once I submit my N400 application.

Thanks!

To try clarify what I said (not what anyone else said):

- you will be expected to have your passport with you in your n400 interview

- the fact that your passport has your maiden name on it has zero impact on your n400 application/interview

..that’s  it. That was my contribution in a nutshell.

you can ask the other poster to clarify the complicating factors s/he raised around i751, British passport renewal etc.

I don’t know why you seem to think you won”t have a combo I751/n400 interview like most others seem to do.

I will start collecting evidence for my N400 and get my UK passport updated also! I’ll also try to expedite it so there is no confusion. Once I have my passport back in my hands I’ll apply for the N400. I just needed to figure out if my UK passport was a huge part of the N400 application. Thank you for your input! It was very helpful

I let my British passport expire and had to enter as an American on my last trip. Longer line to go through. ☹️

I am not thinking I won’t get interviewed. I know I will. In the end, It becomes complicated if both my US and UK passport are in different names. I would have to edit my US passport if my UK passport expires as the UK will not allow me to renew if that’s the case. I obviously want to hold dual. That’s all. You’ve clarified it doesn’t impact my process here but it does impact my UK future renewals. Thank you for that. I think I’m all set. 👍🏽

I’m just going to renew it and change my name. Then apply for Citizenship once that’s all sorted. It becomes to complicated if your names do not match. But thank you so much for the help!! Especially from a UK stand point. :)

You can always be dual and renew. The British will never take you off their list unless you pay money and file papers to be removed. The only thing different for the British passport application is you can only paper file and mail actual passport pics to England if you hold a second citizenship (as in after your US oath ceremony). It’s a slower process they state, in case you are in a hurry to get it back and be done with it.

Why is there a rush to change the name in the UK passport? File the N-400, bring your current UK passport to the N-400 interview (as required) and then change your name on the UK passport afterwards, once you're all done with your N-400 and have become a US citizen.

I don't see the issue, must be a specific UK thing then.

It is a UK issue. I want to maintain my citizenship there too so have to abide by their rules too.

You lose your UK citizenship if you don't change your name?

No I won’t lose it but if I ever wanted to renew- I would be made to change my name on my US passport before renewing. Both passports must have matching names.
