I've not seen anyone post this problem so We may be getting it wrong- My husband is trying to upload the most recent tax return. However it's a 100+ page pdf and none of the compression programs can get it reduced small enough to upload.

Its the 1080 form and the w-2 form is included.

Anyone have an idea of where we're going wrong?

Why not get it straight from the IRS website?

Many tax preparation programs create a lot of extraneous pages for your information or records. Things like “worksheets” are not part of the filing documents. I know TurboTax has an option to print or save only “forms for filing” for use  if you were mailing a paper return. An easy way to see if you should include a form or schedule is look to see if it has an attachment sequence number assigned to the IRS Form or Schedule. Anything else is not part of your tax return.

Start with the main form, the 1040.
Then include any Form/Schedule with an attachment sequence number. Put them in numerical order. Skip informational sheets or anything called worksheet or comparisons to previous years or the average taxpayer.

How many pages do you end up with?

I didn't know that was an option I'm guessing they would have just the essential forms?

If you log in to the irs website and create an account, it will allow you to download the transcript. That’s exactly what USCIS wants to see. Don’t send anything else.

This is perfect! I got it down to 8 pages including the w-2. Alot of the pages were worksheets etc..

Does that seem about right?

Yes it does. Just be sure if a Form/Schedule has multiple pages, you include all it’s pages. A tax return can have additional forms based on the taxpayers specific situation. Are they self-employed (Schedules C and SE)? Do they have investments (schedule D)? Are they farmers, have rental properties, railroad retirement, earned income credit, etc. but it would be most unusual for anybody’s actual tax return to have 100+ pages.
