Hello VJ members,

I got married last year and attempting to file taxes married jointly. But my spouse is abroad and doesn't have Social/ITIN number and unemployed. I see I can apply for W-7 form to get ITIN number but for that do I need to send original passport for my spouse and how long does it normally takes? Since deadline to file taxes is June 15, 2020 (Due to snow in Houston, it got pushed), I would like to get some advice.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You file for ITIN the same time you file for taxes. So you send both forms (1040+W7) for the specific address. Your return is considered filed even if it takes sometime to get ITIN issued before they start working on your return.
