Right -- which is why I included an additional $2000 in my original calculations -- and I think that's an under-estimate of the actual costs.

I have a kid at college. It is ALWAYS more expensive than you think!!!

I'm going off campus for accomodation, the apartment I'm looking at is about 480 dollars a month, so that shouldn't be a concern. Also replying to what you said earlier no there isn't a bf/gf involved lol, I've only recently came out of a relationship.

Then why this course?!

if it’s off campus there are usually extra costs involved.Gas/electricity, internet, not sure if Louisiana includes heating/hot water like some places do or if that might be extra. Could add another $100 or so onto that monthly cost. If you are foreign and don’t have a local guarantor you might have to put deposits down on utilities before they’ll hook you up. Make sure you are very clear what the landlord pays for and what you pay for. You might also be required to take out renters insurance.

Sorry I'm a bit confused, your calculations have been kinda all over the place lol. With my savings and the scholarship, is this doable?

Actually, my calculations have been consistent after I corrected the original one where I had only accounted for one year of the possible scholarship.  Bottom line, $86,000 will not cover two years of community college and two years of Univ. Louisiana - Lafayette, with tuition, books, other costs, room and board, travel costs, personal expenses, etc., according to the estimated costs supplied by the university.

Surely with the scholarship though?

How much are you expecting to get from the scholarship?

Jan22 had already factored in the scholarship in the calculation.

Just got up to speed with this thread! I think this persons 86 grand on top of what 24 thousand from a scholarship? Should be adequate, it’s not like the visa officer would have time to run all these calculations anyway. :)

I, respectfully, disagree.  And, most of the calculations are provided by the university on the I-20.  Since showing the ability to pay for the total education is a major part of qualifying for the student visa, visa officers make this type of calulation all the time.
