N400 with I-751 pending: no decision can be made at this time

Me again (le sigh).

I had my N400 interview today (based on 3 year marriage). My I-751 is also pending.

At the interview I was told that my I-751 case was still in the NJ field office (we temporarily relocated there in the summer before settling in VT in the fall) therefore only N400 part could be done today.

N400 was very short & sweet but at the end of the interview I got a paper stating that I a) completed my civic test; b) decision on my N400 application could not be made at this time.

The office (kudos to everyone in VT field office by the way - incredible nice people) told me that once they receive my I-751 case from NJ, they will either (and most likely according to the lady interviewing me) approve it on the spot or will call my husband and I for another interview if they have any additional questions.

I'm guessing this shouldn't be surprising given that this is a 3-year exception based application; however I don't think I've seen others in a similar situation (where N400 approval depended on I-751 approval) and was just wondering if anyone has and can share this experience?

The N400 cannot be approved until the I751 is approved.  In our case, my wife filed her N400 with her I751 pending, but her I751 made it to our office.  The IO conducted a joint ROC interview with the both of us, then my wife had her N400 interview alone.  She also got the letter saying all was good, but no decision at that time as the IO said she had to review both files with their supervisor.  My wife was approved a few days later for both.

Hopefully your I751 package gets to VT soon.

Good Luck!

Hi, did you get approved? If yes, then how long after the N400 interview did it take? Did they call you for a second interview?

Look at the timeline profile.

My wife's in a similar situation.

She passed the N-400 on Friday, May 13, 2022 but the I-751 is still pending. The officer assured us that she would work on it and approve it but so far nothing has changed.

By the way, here are the 6 questions my wife was asked at the N-400 interview, not necessarily in that order.

1- If the President can no longer serve, who becomes President?

     The Vice-President.

2- What ocean is on the West Coast of the United States?

     Pacific Ocean.

3- There were 13 original states. Name 3.

New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York.

4- Why did the colonists fight the British?

     High taxes.

5- If both the President and Vice-President can no longer serve, who becomes President?

    The Speaker of the House.

6- Name the U.S. war between the North and the South.

    Civil War.

My wife had her oath ceremony on June 23, 2022. In July, she filed I-130 to petition for her mother to enter the US with a green card.
