AOS Applied for SSN w/ USCIS but want to apply locally myself

In September 2020 I sent out all my AOS documents to change my K1 status. I also applied for an EAD and AP and requested a SSN through the USCIS. The original plan was to apply for a SSN 2 weeks after my arrival in the US on 02/27/2020, but then COVID happened and all offices were shut down.

It's been quite some time now and so far there's no progress in my case. By now I'd love to up open a bank account, start working on my credit, get my drivers license and pay taxes together with my husband.

So here is my question: can I apply for a SSN locally so I can get it faster or do I have to wait for the USCIS to provide me a SSN since I already applied for it with them.

Thanks in advance!

You can apply in person with all your documentation if your local SSA office is open. BUT .. as you have missed the initial window created within the 90 days of arriving , you are not eligible for a SSN until you have your EAD. Not clear from your post if you have your EAD in hand yet ..

Thank you so much for your response!

Unfortunately I don't have my EAD yet and since I literally arrived 2 weeks before covid, all offices were closed for a few months.

Guess I don't have a choice but to wait. 😞

Unfortunately no. How long ago did you apply for the AOS EAD ??

Also submit Form W-7, application for ITIN. Regarding taxes, you are a resident alien for tax purposes because of the Substantial Presence test: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/substantial-presence-test

A note that you are NOT eligible for Recovery Rebate credit because you don't have a SSN.

Hi! I know this wasn't your question, but just to say in case it helps, you can likely get a credit card via American Express https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/us-newcomers/?dsparms=dc_pcrid_469426881791_kword_%2Binternational %2Bstudent %2Bcredit %2Bcard_match_b&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyOOZ15HP7wIVviCtBh2XcwJaEAAYAyAAEgLiRPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds, and it was very, very easy to open a bank account with Bank of America as a non-US citizen/resident, way back before I even met my spouse (I didn't want to pay ATM fees while visiting as a tourist).

Hello @EmilyTH I am also similar boat as you are.

I have applied for AOS for K1 visa in September 2020 and i have received my EAD in March 2021 (two weeks ago) but no SS card yet, i have called the SS office today and they said they have not received my data from USCIS yet, they said it takes almost two months for USCIS to send data to SS office, that's long wait -  :(

Now I am planning to take an appointment in the SS office if they are open for it and apply personally instead of waiting for USCIS to send the data. I hope you will received you EAD soon as well so you can apply for SS and start your life here. finger crossed for all of us.
