K1 Visa SSN

Hi everyone, so I arrived in the US on my K1 visa almost 3 weeks ago and I am trying to get my SSN, I have called the local social security office and I have been told that in order to get a number I need proof of my authorization to work or a job offer, as their chart shows that k1s are eligible to work. I know I can’t work on a k1 without the EAD but that can take months to get especially with COVID backlogs at uscis. How have others got their SSN? Is it just a case of my local office not knowing what they are doing? Does anybody have any advice? Thanks

That is the issue. Try a different office. Job offer is not needed. https://www.ssa.gov/coronavirus/

I need help with my Social Security Number (SSN)

We are prioritizing requests for in-person SSN services for:

  • Individuals age 12 or older applying for their first SSN card.
  • Individuals who need to update or correct their SSN information (such as your name, date of birth, or citizenship) to obtain income, resources, or medical care or coverage, or other services or benefits (for example filing a tax return, applying for housing, or seeking an Economic Impact Payment).

If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, call your local office. You can look up the phone number for your local office by accessing our office locator. Please note that appointments may not be immediately available, depending on local health and safety conditions and staffing.

Thank you. Unfortunately the closest other office is 2 hours away, is this the only other option?

Go to the local office.  If they continue to give you the wrong answer, ask to speak with a supervisor.  Print this https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

We had the same problem but this quickly cleared up (however it was a different printout at the time).  Then they asked us why we wanted the SSN.  My answer was "because we are eligible"  Don't back down.  K-1 is eligible without any other documents, BUT you must not wait until the last two weeks of the 90 day period following entry to the US or then you will be out of luck.

We went today for the SSN and were in and out in 5 minutes. I called one office, they said they don’t do in person appointments for 1st time applicants and said we had to mail all documents to them. That was the office close to my work. So we try the office close to our home. Called yesterday and got an appointment for 9am today. Gave the ss-5 form, the printout of the I-94, showed passport and that was it. Said we would have card in 7-10 business days.

The United States is now a country obsessed with the worship of its own ignorance.  Americans are proud of not knowing things.  They have reached a point where ignorance, is an actual virtue.  To reject the advice of experts is to assert autonomy, a way for Americans to insulate their increasingly fragile egos from ever being told they're wrong about anything.  It is a new Declaration of Independence: no longer do we hold these truths to be self-evident, we hold all truths to be self-evident, even the ones that arent true.  All things are knowable and every opinion on any subject is as good as any other.  The fundamental knowledge of the average American is now so low that it has crashed through the floor of "uninformed", passed "misinformed", on the way down, and now plummeting to "aggressively wrong."
