My EAD combo card expired last February, I have my I 485 pending application and I did'nt renew my EAD combo card, If I apply for an extension, Is it the same way in filling and has no fee?

If you would have renewed it up to 120 days before it expired it would have been free of fees. Now that it has expired you can't renew it but have to apply for a new one and you'll have to pay the fees. At least that's my understanding.

That is incorrect. It's still free if full I-485 fee was paid: https://www.uscis.gov/feecalculator

Did you pay the full I-485 fee? If so, it's still free and send it to the Chicago Lockbox. In order to work you'll have to wait until either the renewal is approved or the GC is issued. The expired one will not be extended because the renewal was NOT timely filed: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-resources/handbook-for-employers-m-274/handbook-for-employers-m-274/40-completing-section-2-of-form-i-9/44-automatic-extensions-of-employment-authorization-documents-eads-in-certain-circumstances "The filing date (the date USCIS received the application) appears in the Received Date field. This date should be on or before the “Card Expires” date on the EAD."

you will get 6 month extension, however, that extension is only apply to your work permit not the i-131. Basically you can work up to 6 month with that but you can not travel. You need to refile. if you pay for i-485 and its pending then refilling is free for both i-765 and i-131.

OP won't get the 180 day extension, as their EAD has already expired. The extension only applies if the renewal is filed while the EAD is still valid.

You could've filed 180 days before it expired.

I realize I am late to this thread but for anyone reading in the future, I also thought that but turns out we were interpreting it wrong. We can renew it from 120 before it expired to after. By the time mine reached the office, it was already expired (I explained that briefly in my cover letter) but I still received my EAD/AP combo card quite promptly.

You can renew starting at the 180 days mark before it expires, not 120. And it's okay to file at any time after expired.

If they receive your application before it expires, then NOA1 serves as an extension letter and you can keep working for another 180 days. If they receive your renewal after the card is expired, then you lose the extension, and you can't work until you new card is approved.

Yes, sorry for the mistake. You are totally correct! I should fix up what I wrote.

Edit: Of-course now I can't edit the comment so I'll delete so there is no confusion. 😅
Edit Edit: And... I realize I can't delete it. Oh no. I am obviously not that great at navigating this website.
