Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced on Friday that he plans to sign a bill into law that would prohibit social media companies from censoring Texans’ viewpoints online, adding that censorship is “not going to be tolerated in Texas.”

“We see that the First Amendment is under assault by these social media companies, and that is not going to be tolerated in Texas,” said Governor Abbott at a press conference on Friday alongside State Senator Bryan Hughes (R).

“There is a dangerous movement spreading across the country trying to try to silence conservative ideas, religious beliefs,” the governor added. “We saw that first arise on college campuses.”

“We don’t allow your phone company to cut you off because they don’t like your politics, your cable company can’t cut you off because of your religion,” said Hughes. “These social media companies are common carriers. They have chosen to enter into that business, and they cannot discriminate against people in a violation of the First Amendment.”

What will this law do when someone wants to share child pornography, ask for violence against another group, or divulge private information about another person?

If only Republicans' speech is being being censored.......otherwise, it protects all Texans.

So all Texans will be allowed to distribute child pornography, incite violence and violate the privacy of others.

To my knowledge, social media entities are all currently private sector organizations. The first amendment doesn't apply. Post's can be removed or deleted for any reason. Just like here on VJ.  Private entities can accept or deny speech as they see fit, which is why they all have terms of service that users agree to.

People should actually read the first amendment before bringing it up irrationally like this. Seems like Abbott is putting on another show.

Just like the irrational 100% open with no masks, all that is left for someone who wants to win a Republican primary is to be more Trump like than Trump. Common sense and traditional values be damned.

I can see a TexasRUs social media coming up, where Texans who would be banned elsewhere can enjoy each other. Or was that Parler? Or Gab?

(This has to be tongue in cheek from Moderators on a forum, right? Or should I put that Alanis Morissette song on a loop?)

cool. i could post anything i want here without repercussions!

I don't see anything in the article which would suggest that.....I think you know exactly what the bill is meant to prohibit.  If you think that some platforms don't censor content based strictly on political viewpoints, then you aren't paying attention.
