Results from a national poll released Friday found 65 percent of Americans think corporate America is "taking political correctness too far."

I'm always amazed that people think massive corporations are in thrall to liberals. These changes don't come overnight, they are done after considerable amounts of market research. Hasbro decided that the overall brand that Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head -- amongst other Potato Head-themed toys -- would change to drop the "Mr." at the beginning of it to make it clear that all of these toys are part of one there. This change would have been several years in the making after much consideration, including what consumers' thoughts would be about a change. Hasbro would not make a change without knowing that the possible "damage" of a few pearl-clutchers out there looking to be offended by something that makes sense to Hasbro financially is low enough to not outweigh the benefits of the change. 

 

You can still buy Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. They have not been "cancelled." Hasbro is run by capitalists looking to make more money. This won't hurt their bottom line. Hell, people are buying up Mr. Potato Head toys right now and they were never going to be removed from the market in the first place!

While a lot of corporate decisions do take a long time to formulate, there are a lot of knee jerk decisions made very quickly.  Whether corporations are in the thralls of extreme Leftism, I tend to agree that they are not, they are only trying to stay in business and keep making a profit (I know, this is a bad word), gambling on the fact that there are enough people that simply do not care what they say or don't say relative to Leftist political topics.  Today, being silent on a manufactured hot topic is also wrong.

Whelp, let's think about it. A potato has no gender really. The plant contains both sex species for reproductive methods. I did used to have a Mr. and Mrs. when I was a kid. Never asked for them and it was a stupid toy. Usually ended up sticking the pieces where they weren't supposed to go. Theoretically Hasbro could make the toy cheaper and save the company money by not having to make and uniquely package both 'genders' and just having one potato and the parts for whatever selective placement the child wants, which always made better sense to me anyway. I seem to recall there was a terrible outcry about LOL Dollz a few years back.

They could make it a lot cheaper if they went back to the days when they only provided the accessories and the buyer was expected to giver their kids a real potato to play with.

I am a capitalist and have no problems with corporations making profits. This was a decision that makes sense to Hasbro that is outside of politics -- how are we going to get more money out of a stagnant brand? I mean, I had a Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head when I was a kid and I thought they were kind of old fashioned back then, but I had fun sticking lips where eyes should have been and vice versa, etc. My dad called these my "Salvador Dali Potato Head" designs. How do you make plastic potatoes more interesting? More accessories, sure, but the introduction of a singular "Potato Head" overarching theme indicates that the line is going to expand with more characters. That's all this is.

I completely agree, in the specific case of the Potato Head, this was Hasbro taking advantage of getting this toy back in the forefront of public thought.  Heck, if one were to buy a Mr. and a Mrs. PH, I am sure there were several where the accessories were used interchangeably, so nothing is really new here other than the brand exposure.  So now "woke" parents have to buy all three PHs for their kids to play with.

   The most puzzling thing is not the name change, but that people still actually buy this toy. It was horrible when I was a kid and it hasn't exactly aged well compared to the variety of toys available now.

  Hasbro is the company that killed off Optimus Prime and made 8 year old boys cry in movie theatres all over America just to make a buck. Then brought him back to life a few months later just to make a little more. I guess they haven't really changed.
