Texas school scraps chivalry assignment that had girls 'obey any reasonable request of a male'

Gross. We learned about the middle ages and the concept of chivalry in middle school without this kind of hot garbage.

Quote

The lesson called for them to dress in "a feminine manner to please the men" and to "address all men respectfully by title, with a lowered head and curtsy." It instructed them to "never criticize a male," "initiate a conversation" or "whine." It directed them to "walk behind men or walk daintily, as if their feet were bound." And they were told to cook, clean and "obey any reasonable request of a male. If not sure if it is considered reasonable, ladies can check with their teachers.”

Students could continue the actions at home.

"Fathers and adult males may insist on following the rules into the evening," according to the assignment.

“Outside the classroom, ladies cannot show intellectual superiority if it would offend the men around them."

Bonus points were offered for every adult signature proving they "were worthy of the honor by the gentlemen."

So?  Handled locally.

Brings to mind these:

How many men does it take to open a beer?
None.  It should be opened by the time she brings it.
   ----------------------------------------
Why is a Laundromat a really bad place to pick up a woman?
Because a woman who can't even afford a washing machine will probably never be able to support you.
   ----------------------------------------
Why do women have smaller feet than men?
It's one of those "evolutionary things" that enables them to stand closer to the kitchen sink.
   ----------------------------------------
How do you know when a woman is about to say something smart?
When she starts her sentence with "A man once told me..."
   ----------------------------------------
How do you fix a woman's watch?
You don't.  There's a clock on the oven.
   ----------------------------------------
If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is yelling at the front door, whom do you let in first?
The dog, of course.  He'll shut up once you let him in.
   ----------------------------------------
What's worse than a Male Chauvinist Pig?
A woman who won't do what she's told.
   --------------------------------------
What's the correct answer when your wife asks "What's on the TV?"
    "Dust!"

I hated to do this, but I had to finally give you an up vote.  Not only were they funny, but you haven't used them here before (that I can remember)

The "so" is why did the teacher think this was appropriate in the first place? Apparently this wasn't the first year the lesson had been carried out. Not only that, much of the lesson doesn't even match what the chivalric code actually was during the Middle Ages. Foot-binding? Sure, why not throw in oppressive customs meant to keep women "in their place" from other, completely unrelated cultures?

Girls don't need to be put "in their place" at school or anywhere else for that matter. This kind of backward thinking needs to be put "in its place" -- in the dustbin of history.

We weren't too young at 13 to read parts of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and King Arthur, and learn about coats of arms, and what chivalry actually was about -- service of knights to their lords and to God.

Yeah, it doesn't sound anything like the historical concept of chivalry. Texas is on a roll.

I will give Texas -- or at least the local school board -- a tip of the hat for realizing this is pretty awful.

I guess they did eventually. I'm not sure how the teacher arrived at this exercise in the first place. Teaching is not really my forte, but I can think of so many better ways to teach kids about the values behind the concept of chivalry.
