A few days later I went to the department of licensing to get my name changed and address changed. The man at the counter kept giving me BS. Saying the last name with an A is just a nickname etc etc and I have to have my legal name for it, since the id I have goes thru homeland security and they have to match.

That's insanity! I have had the feminine form of the last name since I got married and have never, ever encountered an issue with governmental agencies here. Considering a lot of married couples have different last names these days, it seems so weird that they would make such a big deal over it.

I'm really sorry it's been such a hassle for you. My husband and I just bought real estate in both of our names and while people might be surprized at the extra "a" on my name, they simply update my name on the documents and that's that. Any legal stuff we've had to do, same thing. We've had no major problems at all. I hope after all you've done that it's over and people won't ask about it any more. πŸ˜•

So I’m informally going by the -ova, but changed my legal name to match his with the -ov. ❀️

That's a good idea too. I think this is what a lot of female Russian immigrants here do. In fact here in the Chicago area, I see a bunch of Russian and former USSR people who go by Americanized versions of their names but when they speak Russian they call each other by their Russian/Slavic names.

If you ever speak to Russian speakers, they will automatically add the "a" to your name anyway for grammatical correctness. :)
